Gilgamesh, Derrek Hines’ thrilling new theatrical version of the world’s oldest known story, visits two Coventry venues this winter – The Ellen Terry Building from 27 February to 2 March and Bablake School from 12 to 14 March 2007. Based on his own critically acclaimed epic poem, Derrek Hines’ witty and subversive new play, presented by Classworks Theatre in association with the Belgrade Theatre, re-tells the ancient story of Gilgamesh. Two thirds divine, one third wicked; the King of Uruk, Iraq’s golden city. A playboy, a tyrant and a demigod. But when the Gods decide to trim the King's wick with the help of a temple prostitute and the Wildman Enkidu, things don't go according to plan.

Gilgamesh also sees theÌý return of Claire Cogan and Alex Jones to Coventry. Both actors appeared in The Mysteries 2006 in the Cathedral Ruins last summer. Derrek Hines’ highly successful epic poem of Gilgamesh was published in 2002. Classworks have used innovative design by Phil Eddolls and stunning projection by Arnim Friess in combination with new music by Ilona Sekacz to reflect both the story’s roots and geography. The play is directed by Classworks’ Claudette Bryanston and is suitable for ages 14 and over. For tickets call Coventry Tourist Information on 024 7622 7264. |
