Truro Cathedral at night

Flick of a Switch

The illuminated spires of Truro Cathedral won't be shining out over the City tonight, because, during the night of Wednesday 27th and into the early hours of Thursday 28th February the lights will be switched off as part of Energy Saving Day.

The nationwide campaign Energy Saving Day (E-Day) is trying to show how small energy savings can add up and potentially play a huge part in tacking climate change.

During the campaign the whole of the country will be invited to see if they too can save energy in their own home, school or office.

Simple everyday tasks like leaving off electrical items which are not in use, such as lights in rooms, televisions left on standby, mobile phone chargers left plugged in and computers left on in offices overnight are all things we can do to help.

Direct feedback on the results of their actions on national electricity demand is available via the E-Day website:

Canon Missioner Philip Lambert said, "We are supporting this initiative because we believe everyone has a responsibility towards our over-consumption of the God given resources on this planet.

"This is not just for our own sake, but for that of our children and for the sake of all the creatures and plants which share the earth with us"

"This is not just for our own sake, but for that of our children and for the sake of all the creatures and plants which share the earth with us.

"At the moment the Cathedral floodlights are on all night but for Energy Saving Day they will be turned off as a part of a national urgent wake up call to remind us to reduce energy consumption now.

"The Cathedral floodlights provide visitors and residents of Truro with a comforting and inspiring sight. The lit spires pierce the gloom of the night, giving hope and brightening our lives. We will continue to illuminate the Cathedral at night, but need to investigate ways in which we can reduce our overall consumption."
