Thresher Shark Caught

A giant Thresher shark weighing half a ton was landed at Newlyn Fish Market on Wednesday 21 November. The fish was caught by the netter boat called The Imogen and has been auctioned off.

They've seen a few monsters of the deep at Newlyn Fish Market but an giant Thresher shark has caused a few raised eyebrows on the market.听

It's believed that the 16 foot shark could be a world record, tipping the scales at 510 kilo or 1,250 pounds, almost half a ton.

The giant fish was caught by W Stephenson and Sons in Cornish waters.听They say it was still alive when it was brought onto the boat.

Thresher Sharks

Male thresher sharks mature at about 10.5 feet and females at around 8.5 - 14.3 feet. They are about five feet long at birth and grow 1.6 feet a year as juveniles. Adults grow about 0.3 feet a year.

Bony fish make up most of the Threshers diet. They feed mostly on small schooling fish such as menhaden, herring and mackerel. Bluefish and butterfish are the most common meal. They also feed on bonito and squid.

Thresher Sharks encircle schools of fish and then stun the prey with their tails. This is often done in groups and/or pairs. They have also been known to kill sea birds with their tails.

Thresher sharks are most common in temperate waters. In the Atlantic Ocean, it ranges from Newfoundland to Cuba and southern Brazil to Argentina, and from Norway and British Isles to Ghana and Ivory Coast, including the Mediterranean Sea.
