About Cornwall

The train captured on the Falmouth Branchline

Steam Returns

Cornwall goes back in time from Sunday 25 March as a week of steam train trips return to the county. Regular steam on the railways ended in Cornwall more than 40 years ago. See a photo gallery and the timetable for the train trips...

The clocks have been turned back to the early '60s until Thursday 29 March 2007, as once again steam trains dominate the Cornish railway lines.

In the days before Dr Beeching wielded his axe, the old steam trains used to thunder through Cornwall. They used to run along the scenic branch lines, and the freight trains travelled to the Cornish ports.

Once again the nostalgic sound and smell of a steam train has returned to Cornwall for the week. In the case of St Ives, this will be the first steam hauled train to visit since the '60s.

As most of Cornwall's branch lines are now single tracks, the trains will be hauled by a steam locomotive in one direction, and a diesel locomotive the other.

Bookings are being taken for the steam trips that are running throughout the week. See below for the timetable. The booking line is 0871 871 4119.

For more information also check out the Past Time Rail website. They are organising the March trips. Click on the link below for their website:

The steam trips will take in Newquay, St Ives, Falmouth and the Cornish China Clay Lines.
