Ship wrecked

A programme called Deep Wreck Mysteries was screened recently on television and it featured the sinking of a Canadian warship, The Regina, off Newquay in 1944. We spoke to the mystery man from Falmouth about his memories of the sinking ship.

The Regina was part of an allied convoy escorting merchant ships steaming down the north Cornish coast bound for France.

As she turned back to help the American vessel SS Ezra Weston that had been bombed, she herself became a target and sunk within seconds of a torpedo hit. The result was a loss of 30 lives.

On board the Regina was one of two Royal Navy ratings who survived the attack. Until now no one has heard his remarkable tale. 成人快手 Radio Cornwall reporter Hannah Stacey tracked Andy Anderson down to his home in Falmouth.

Andy Anderson was a survivor that none of the Canadians who were on the ship had any idea existed.

Living in Falmouth, he has kept quite for over sixty years and the reason why no one remembers him was that he was on board for less than 24 hours having been assigned the ship at the very last minute.
