Porthmeor beach

Porthmeor Beach in St Ives is a popular surfing spot because of its close proximity to the town.

Facts

There are currently 250,000 surfers in the UK.

The biggest surf normally occurs on a pushing tide, especially on the Bristol Channel coast.

Croyde Bay in North Devon and Fistral Beach in Cornwall are two of the most popular surfing beaches in Britain.

The first ever degree in surfing was offered by the University of Plymouth.

The record for the most number of surfers on a board was broken in 1989 at Fistral Beach, Newquay. Twelve surfers rode a 37ft longboard shaped by Tim Mellors.

Overlooked by the St Ives Tate Gallery, Porthmeor Beach offers waves that are suitable for beginners to intermediate.

St ives

Location of St Ives

Porthmeor beach faces a n/nw direction so it is fairly sheltered from west or south west swells.

During a South Westerly wind it blows cross-offshore making it a useful spot when most of the North coast is blown out. Works best from low - mid tide. Gets very crowded in the Summer months.
