Description of garden

This garden represents the epic journey made by Captain Cook and Sir Joseph Banks as they left England to map the Southern hemisphere in 1768 in the good ship 鈥淓ndeavour鈥�.

Stepping stones lead you around the garden through continents of planting and over the water until you reach the large pavilion. The pavilion is made from stretched PVC and evokes the billowing sails of the ship and offers a place to escape the elements.

A limestone wall around the boundary reflects the treacherous limestone cliffs along the coast of Eastern Australia, and the planting throughout reflects flora collected at the ports Banks and Cook docked at along the way. It includes Echium candicans from Madeira and Astelia banksii, a native of New Zealand.

Inspiration / influences

Inspired by the epic journey made by Captain Cook and Sir Joseph Banks on the Endeavour in 1768 to map the unknown Southern hemisphere. Banks, also named the 'father of Australia', collected flora and fauna specimens at most ports and many of these are represented in the garden.

This is a departure for the Flemings team. Well known for hard landscaping, outdoor entertainment areas and tropical planting, this garden is the complete opposite, with little hard landscaping and a mass of mostly hardy plants. This is not an Australian garden, in fact it's more of an English style garden "with an Aussie twist".

This is Ian's first big show garden design at Chelsea Flower Show and Fleming's 7th garden at Chelsea.
