“With your help, our team has been able to support local authorities to bring even more children to safety from trafficking – and take a step forward toward equipping our partners with training to prevent any child being trafficked in the future.” – Leo Ackon, Director of Advocacy, IJM Ghana

In June, our IJM Ghana team –  with police and the Department of Social Welfare – brought three child trafficking survivors aged 10, 12 and 16 to safety. They had been forced to work long hours through the night, mending nets, scooping water from boats and pulling in the day’s catch from Lake Volta. After he was brought to safety, 10-year-old Divine* said, “The work was hard, too hard for me. I do not want to go back there.”

We’ve been amazed by the generosity of Radio 4 listeners and IJM supporters who have raised £65,263 to help stop child trafficking. Your help means that IJM’s teams are working with authorities around the world to bring trafficked children like Divine to safety and support them with trauma-informed care. An estimated 10 million children are in slavery today and the Covid-19 crisis means that children are more vulnerable to traffickers. That’s why your support matters so much.

As well as bringing children to freedom, your donations help us support Ghanaian authorities as they build capacity for identifying cases of trafficking and secure justice for survivors. Already, one of Divine’s traffickers has been sentenced, stopping them from harming other children. Time after time, IJM’s global teams have seen that when traffickers are held to account, this creates a deterrent, leading to reductions in the prevalence of trafficking. In the last year, thanks to the support of people like you, IJM and local authorities around the world have brought more people to safety than ever before.

A special thank-you to our presenter, rapper, author and broadcaster Guvna B, for using his voice to amplify the experiences of trafficking survivors. He told the story of Godwin, a courageous survivor of child trafficking who used his freedom to bring freedom to others. Thanks to the support of Radio 4 listeners, Godwin’s dream of a world in which every child is free has come a step closer.
