Make the perfect Mother's Day seed card
It's a card and a gift rolled into one! Make our super pretty paper seed heart that will bloom into beautiful flowers for someone special. It really is the perfect gift to show your mother, or any important woman in your life, how much you love them!
- Scrap paper to recycle
- Large mixing bowl
- Sieve
- Blender (or a potato masher/your hands if you don鈥檛 have one!)
- Seeds (wildflower seeds work best because they are small and attract wildlife)
- Food colouring (optional)
- Spoon
- Sponge
- Baking tray lined with baking paper
- Cookie cutter to make shape (or a rolling pin and scissors to cut out your shape from a sheet)
Instructions
Before you start: Make sure you ask a grown-up for help and lay down some towels, this make can get really messy!
Step one
Rip up all your scrap paper into small squares and leave them to soak in a mixing bowl of warm water for 10-15 minutes. The longer you leave the paper squares to soak, the better!
Step two
Transfer your soaked paper into a blender, and blend for a couple of minutes, until it turns into a thick soupy mix. If you don鈥檛 have a blender, then used your hands or a potato masher to mush together the paper to a mushy pulp consistency.
Pour your pulp into a sieve and drain over the sink or another bowl. Gently shake the sieve to remove any excess water - be careful not to dry it out too much, as the moisture will help your seed paper shapes to mould together.
Step three
Put your drained pulp back into your mixing bowl and add your seeds. If you've chosen to use food colouring, add this in now as well.
Mix everything together with a spoon.

Step four
Pre-heat your oven to it's lowest temperature setting.
Line a baking tray with baking paper, and place a cookie cutter on top. Spoon in some of your pulp mix to create a thin layer inside the cookie-cutter, around 3mm deep. If you don鈥檛 have a cookie-cutter, spoon all of your mix onto the baking paper, then use a rolling pin to create a 3mm sheet of seed paper, which you can later cut your own shapes out of!
Step five
Once you have a 3mm layer of pulp inside your cookie cutter, soak up any excess water using an old sponge. Make sure to get into all the corners so it is only slightly damp.
Once you have finished, you should be able to remove the cookie cutter. Repeat this process if you're making more than one heart!

Step six
With the help of a grown-up, put the tray into the oven (on it's lowest setting), making sure you flip the shapes after some time so they dry throughout. This should take around an hour.
While your seed paper is drying in the oven, make and decorate your card! Don't forget to leave a space on your card for the seed heart.
When your seed paper shapes are completely dry, grab a grown-up,听take them out of the oven and allow them to cool fully. You can now add them to your Mother's Day card!
Now all that's left is to give it to that special someone! and watch the flowers grow!
