Make an eco-friendly beeswax wrap

Beeswax wraps are a great eco alternative to single-use plastics. Unlike cling film, they can be used again and again and they are excellent at keeping your food fresh. Follow this fun and simple tutorial to create your very own beeswax wraps and keep your food plastic-free for evermore! 馃悵 馃寧

You will need
  • Beeswax (a handfull of pellets or a grated beeswax block)
  • Recycled fabric (cotton, linen or hemp works best)
  • Scissors or pinking shears
  • An old baking tray
  • Cooking brush

WARNING: Be careful! Melted wax can be tricky to remove from fabrics and surfaces.

Method

Step one:听

With the help of a grown-up preheat your oven to 90掳C.

Step two:

Choose your fabric! Pick any colour or pattern you fancy, why not try recycling materials you no longer need. You could even use an old table cloth, a pair of curtains or clothes! Cotten, linen or hemp fabrics are best for this project. If you plan on re-cycling old fabric make sure that it is clean and that your grown-up is happy for you to chop it up.

Step three:

With help from your grown-up cut your fabric into a square. Make sure to check that it will fit onto your baking tray and around whatever you want to wrap up. Any scissors will do, but if you have pinking shears use them as they will help stop your materials from fraying.听

Step four:

Once you have cut out the shape you want, lay your square on the bottom of your baking tray. It is best to use an old baking tray that no one will miss if it gets covered in beeswax.

Step five:

Now for the important bit, take your beeswax pellets or shavings and sprinkle them evenly over the fabric in the baking tray. A light even layer should do the trick.

Step six:

Next, with the help of your grown-up carefully put the tray into the preheated oven for 6-8 minutes. You will notice that the beeswax will have melted and the fabric will look damp.

Step seven:

With the help of your grown-up听remove the hot tray from the oven. Check that all the fabric is damp, if there are any dry patches use a cooking brush to spread the beeswax.

Step eight:

Use tongs to pick up your wrap and hang it up to dry. It should only take a couple of minutes!

Step nine:

Once your wrap is dry you can wrap it around anything you want to keep fresh. We used our beeswax wrap to cover fruit, vegetables, jars, and to ke our cookies for longer in the biscuit tin!

Your brand new beeswax wrap should last around 6 months. Make sure to wash your wrap with cold water and to let it dry in between uses.
