Making the news at Longsands College

School Report 2009: Longsands College makes the news

They've got just one day to 'make the news' - that means working on newspapers, the school website, making films, creating and presenting a news bulletin... in fact, everything a 'real' newsroom does. How will Longsands' pupils cope under pressure?

Thursday 26th March is 成人快手 News School Report Day, a national campaign giving students the chance to find out what the news is and how it's prepared for a news bulletin, be it for TV, radio or online.

School Report: working on the pc

Pupils look at the 成人快手 News website

Lesson 1 - be the first to 'break' the big story

Students in Year 8 at Longsands College, St Neots, were ahead of the game by holding their news day on Wednesday - but don't you think that's rather clever of them? In the fast-moving, competitive world of news it pays to 'break the big story' - and that means getting in first!

Lesson 2 - what makes a 'good' news story?

No news is definitely NOT good news on School Report Day so we sent along 成人快手 Radio Cambridgeshire producer and reporter, Alex Pope, to act as mentor for the day. Together with some of the college's teachers, it was her job to help the pupils come up with their own news stories and turn those ideas into features for radio, television and newspapers - both tabloid and broadsheet styles. And all of this in just one day! That's a hard lesson in what life is like in a real newsroom.

School Report: interviewing skills

So, what did they come up with? With 80 pupils taking part, the ideas were many and varied and included local interest stories such as vandalism in St Neots, and stories that have featured in the national news such as the recent publicity over the deaths of Jade Goody and actress Natasha Richardson, the credit crunch and the nutritional value of school meals.

Lesson 3 - it's all about how you approach the subject

It's easy to jump on the bandwagon when it comes to the news. After all, we all know how many people are interested in the minutiae of celebrity lifestyles, and, no matter what you think of some of these famous faces, there are ways of including such stories if you think carefully about how you approach the subject.

School Report - watching the teacher

Eager pupils gather around to learn more

And this wasn't lost on pupils at Longsands who wanted to talk about both Jade Goody and Natasha Richardson. But, they thought carefully about their approach, and came up with some great ideas to make the stories relevant to them.

Jade's death from cervical cancer has raised awareness of the condition and of course, there's now a way of reducing the risk in young women - including many of our Longsands reporters who may soon be receiving the protective jab. Now that's a great way to make the Jade Goody story relevant to their audience.

School Report - tabloid news at Longsands

Working on a tabloid feature

Actress Natasha Richardson's fatal skiing accident also piqued our young reporters' interest. And again, instead of merely 'reporting' the incident, pupils decided to discuss safety in sport more generally, by discussing protective clothing worn by some of the school's keen skateboarders, and some of the injuries incurred by pupils playing contact sports including rugby. Again, they've taken a story that has received a lot of national publicity, and approached it from a different angle. That makes really good sense when it comes to reporting the news.

Lesson 4 - hone your presentation skills

Our school reporters pulled a lot of these stories together to create a news bulletin podcast, which you can listen to below. Just like a real radio bulletin, the five-minute broadcast includes topical news, weather, sport and that crucial finishing touch, the 'And Finally' feature - on this occasion, a 'happy birthday to Cambridge University', which is celebrating 800 years of learning.

Listen to Longsands pupils' news bulletin, complete with the 成人快手 News theme - it sounds just like the real thing!

And if that whets your appetite, you can hear more from pupils, teachers and Alex Pope, who mentored the eager reporters by clicking on this link:
