Paper Tiger - Classworks

Paper Tiger by Classworks

A class act

What's it like being a young actor in Cambridge? Asa Hedge blogs his way through preparations for the Classworks Theatre's big production.

Classworks is a youth theatre group associated with the Junction, Cambridge. For more info and costs visit their site.

Final week

罢耻别蝉诲补测听

We only had two more days till our first show of Paper Tiger so this rehearsal was to polish up the scenes and to run through it all.

Papert tiger

Ready for show time

The rehearsal was 12-6pm and it felt like a long afternoon but we all did some good work. The nerves were starting to kick in a little, in some of us, but we were all exited and pleased with our work which was looking like being able to guarantee a good show!

Wednesday

For some of us who thought yesterday was tiring we had it coming today with a 10-6pm rehearsal! We started off with a normal run through with no costume then followed by a full dress rehearsal.

Roland Eva, a fantastic photographer joined us to capture the dress and some behind the scenes action! After the hard days work we had a pre party at Nandos which was a nice relaxing get together before the show.

Show day people and some of us voluntarily came in to help prepare for tonight. A few members of the youth theatre and myself helped with things like putting hooks on the frame, cleaning the bench etc.

We were meant to be plotting lights but we experienced some technical problems so ended up having the tech rehearsal very late. We got through it with a little bit of time to have a break before the show.

When we all arrived for the show, we warmed up, got ready and waited in the wings to perform a brilliant show! The show went fantastically brilliant!听听听

Paper Tiger - Classworks

A successful show

Last show of Paper Tiger. It was fantastic and we had some really good feedback. I want to thank Ros for writing the play. Without her there would be no Paper Tiger!

Also big thanks to Lucy and Caroline who both directed the piece brilliantly, and to Elaine and Jenny who have done wonderful work for CLASH.听 Rachel deserves a massive thank you for all the help back stage as do the tech guys - they did a good job!听 My final thanks is to us cast members for making this show a good one!

Week 8

Apologies are owed to everyone because there won't be a week 7 blog because I was at a college interview but I hope the week 7 meeting of Clash went well!

As for week 8, it鈥檚 getting nearer to our first performance of Paper Tiger鈥 From Tuesday the 18th听 Clash and CYT2 only have 9 more days till the first performance!!!

This week we worked on the Burger Bar scene which is where Sam does her work experience and is re-united with old enemy, Jade. The focus was on us extras in the Burger Bar.听

Using our knowledge of the exercise we did with the mirroring, we got into groups and created different characters and personalities; For example we had a group of depressed teenage customers, some Hoodies and some posh privately educated boys, and a group of girls on a day out.

The main thing now for Clash is that we need to make sure we know our lines, and practice. For our Blog readers outside of Clash and CYT2, if you want tickets, you can get them from:

Week 6

Hopefully everyone had a good half term. Now we are back, we have a show to put on! Nuisance, Narrator and Sam went out to work in a different space whilst the rest of us had to make a windy beech scene, which is one of Sam鈥檚 memories.

We did some pretty good work. I quite liked Ollie and Peter with their kite flying where they are swaying in time. Also included in the scene, are an ice cream seller and customers, and two siblings.

The younger sibling is building sand castles whilst his older brother has taken interest in a girl sunbathing.

Then we have other people just having a good day out on the beach. During the second half of the session, we worked on Sam, Nuisance and the Narrator doing a bebo page and Sam gets back in touch with old friends and enemies鈥

Week 5

This week CLASH read through the script of Paper Tiger. We all had to play different parts to show our capabilities.

We had gone through bits before, like the flash back scene of Sam receiving a phone call and the opening scene. We also made up a scene of Sam on work experience in a burger bar and meeting old enemy Jade.

Ros has now semi- scripted the burger bar scene and we are going to work with London MC, Jehst to finish it. During half term we will get emailed our parts so when we come back we will not come as ourselves but as a totally different character!

Week 3

Before I start this blog an apology needs to go to Matt because I forgot his name in my last blog. I would also like to congratulate the CLASH members who took part in the Holocaust memorial at the Guildhall in Cambridge. Jenny, there was a lot of good feedback so a round of applause goes to you!

This week Ros (the writer for Paper Tiger) came to watch and we repeated the mirroring in big groups exercise.听 We were also given a new scene from Paper Tiger which we had to act out and we also made up our own scene where Sam (the main character) is on work experience and meets an enemy from Primary school. We did the scene twice so we could swap genders where if a boy originally played Sam, a girl would now have to play the part. We then discussed how a male would settle a conflict with another male and how the females would do it.听

Week 4听听

Classworks Artistic Director, Jenny led this session. We did a team building exercise to stand as close as we could together in an absolute straight line, then we closed our eyes. Once we were ready, we had to take a step forward and keep in the straight line. Some of us failed miserably! We then got given a type of setting and had to do a group drama without saying any words.

We then moved on to showing how we act different around certain people, like around our friends we would all show off and be cocky whilst with maybe our Grandparents, we鈥檇 be all nice and caring. Loads of comical bits! I tried to do a cockney accent but failed! One group had a boy whose mate was in love with his Mum (scary). I鈥檝e had word from Lucy saying that Ros got a lot of really great stuff to feed into the script - so keep up with the brilliant work!

Week 1

Start of a new term at the youth theatre group, CLASH - a place where it doesn鈥檛 matter what your acting capabilities are as long as you want to be there to act! We introduced ourselves and spoke about what we expect to get from CLASH. Most of us agreed we were there for fun but still treat it seriously when it comes to the play we are doing, Paper Tiger. After playing some games to get us remembering each other鈥檚 names, we experimented on mirroring with a partner.

Then we used a stylised way of showing a myspace/bebo page. Some people used themselves as different parts of the page like profile, song, pictures, hobbies part etc. We met Ros, the writer for our play, Paper Tiger, and she said she really liked the ideas we had used and will work them into the script which she is specially writing for us, based on interviews, application forms and web pages.

Week 2

We discussed what makes a good play. All of us had to say a suggestion and that鈥檚 the great thing about CLASH - everyone鈥檚 voice is heard. Got a suggestion? Say it! We did an exercise where we had to start every sentence with 鈥測es and鈥︹ I got a bit annoyed when Kat said 鈥淵es and are you happy with the person who knocked you off your ped鈥 and I had to reply 鈥淵es and鈥!! I liked Nancy鈥檚 and this other lad who鈥檚 name I cant remember (sorry mate I am useless at remembering names and you will receive an apology in the next blog!): Their piece involved a French boy smashing a sweet shop shouting 鈥淛鈥檃ime les bonbons鈥.

All the pieces were excellent.听 Then we travelled, mirroring in groups and the leader changed when we changed direction. We also experimented with ideas for an internet chat room sort of like what we did with the bebo thing. I do apologise if I can鈥檛 remember anyone鈥檚 names or get muddled with the wrong person... Look out for the next blog with pictures!听
