George Bear with Olive Owl

George plays it cool with Olive

Aloysius - bear-faced blogger: Part three

George the teddy bear is preparing for the role of his life - starring as Aloysius in St John's Players' production of Brideshead Revisited. Welcome to his regular bear-blog - a no holds barred look at life from a bear's-eye point of view...

Part three - 5th September 2007: Aloysius - a bear in disgrace

I am in disgrace!听 I tried to strangle that 鈥渕ean Mulcaster鈥, and my owner is not too chuffed with me.

The week started peacefully enough. I was taken down by my owner, the director of 鈥淏rideshead Revisited鈥 (M&S plastic carrier this time, very nice, too) to the Fulbourn Centre, and Olive, my owl girlfriend, was snuggled up in the bag, too.听 I wanted to impress her with my theatrical knowledge, so thought I鈥檇 have a little play on the lighting desk (that鈥檚 Olive in the picture above wearing the headphones, isn鈥檛 she gorgeous?).

You may wonder why I am wearing sunglasses. We-e-lll, I鈥檒l tell you.听 At home, I had overheard a very exciting snippet of conversation about my much-need reading lessons (I do have a whole script to learn by 24th October, you know).听 My owner called to her hubby, 鈥淲here鈥檚 the Basildon Bond?鈥澨 I was SO-OO excited! They were obviously trying to locate the sexy new James Bond, Daniel Craig, to give me my reading lessons, coupled with acting lessons, and 鈥渃ool dude鈥 lessons (not that I鈥檓 in particular need of the last one, naturally鈥).听 I didn鈥檛 know he lived in Basildon, though.听

George and Ryder

Cuddle! Don't SQUEEZE!

Anyhow, hence the 鈥渃ool鈥 shades. I think the lights had fused though. Couldn鈥檛 see a thing.听 Never mind, I think Olive was suitably impressed.听

After this, I was introduced to Captain Charles Ryder, (played by Kieron Toner).听 He is rather a handsome fellow, but don鈥檛 you think he鈥檚 grasping me rather tightly and looking at me in a rather fierce fashion?听

I think he may be a little jealous of my 鈥渟pecial relationship鈥 with my adopted daddy, 鈥淕olden Boy鈥 Sebastian (played by Dean Ward).听

George and Sebastian

Ah, my beloved Sebastian...

Before Captain Ryder鈥檚 grip tightened any further, I was rescued by the aforesaid 鈥淕olden Boy鈥 and you can see me here gazing adoringly at my handsome saviour.

However, my bliss at being in Sebastian鈥檚 arms was short-lived.听 If you remember, 鈥渕ean Mulcaster鈥 (played by Tony Champion) took great delight in chucking me through the window at Sebastian.听

George plays Yoda

Oh, the humiliation!

Not content with such violent behaviour, he decided to completely humiliate me, and stuck a鈥 鈥淵oda鈥 mask on me.听 And in front of Olive, too!听 Oh, the indignity, the degradation.听

I felt I had no choice but to fly at him, paws outstretched, and try to throttle him.听 Who could blame me?听 Before Mulcaster鈥檚 face turned completely purple, I was wrenched away from him by my owner and taken home in disgrace.

George and Mulcaster

"He had it coming..."

Hence, here I am in solitary confinement in the spare room, kept away from my beloved Olive (no chance of starting any baby bowls yet, then). My last glimpse of her, as I was unceremoniously stuffed into a spare plastic carrier (鈥淐ostcutters 鈥 I mean, Costcutters!鈥 鈥 the shame), was of her fluttering around looking rather ashamed of me, and casting her owl eyes at Captain Ryder. She always was one for a uniform.

Have I lost Olive to the army?听 Am I still playing Aloysius?听 Will I ever feel better? When鈥檚 Daniel Craig turning up?听 It鈥檚 not that far from Basildon...

Keep your paws on this page ready for George Bear's next blog

Brideshead Revisited, produced by St John鈥檚 Players runs from 24th-27th October at The Townley Memorial Hall, Fulbourn Institute, Fulbourn.

Shaving foam? Shaving foam?? I'll shaving foam you, young bear! Then you would fit the rhyme: 'Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear, Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair, So Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn't fuzzy was he'. Hope Seb and Co don't give you the run around (Seb - Coe - run, get it?!).

George Bear (aka Aloysius)
Dear Erasmus (aren't you shaving foam?)Dean (my adopted daddy) first appeared with St John's Players in "Murder on the Nile" in 2002, so my owner informs me (I would have quite fancied the Bette Davis part, myself, actually) and from the very beginning he seemed to have a golden "aura" about him, bringing in audiences from far and wide. He now even has his own "golden spot" on the stage (downstage right), which his detractors occasionally try to muscle in on (are you reading this, "Captain Ryder"?). Only last week, I overhead "plotting" between these "detractors" and the lighting man, who was offered a fiver as a backhander to move the "golden spotlight" to tip off the edge of the stage, taking my beloved with it, but I foiled this dastardly plan. I am ever vigilant now to ensure that "Golden Boy" remains intact until the final performance. Bye bye for now. Luv "Gorgeous" George

So why is Sebastian, played by Dean Ward, known as 'Golden Boy' please?
