The former boyband star, Stephen Gately, will play Jesus in the musical Godspell, which is based on the Gospel according to Matthew.听 It was a huge hit for creator Stephen Schwartz whose latest West End blockbuster is Wicked.

There hadn't been anything quite like it on stage when it opened in 1971.听 The cast of ten - five men and five women - were dressed as clowns.听 Jesus wore a red nose and a superman shirt, with a red heart painted on his forehead.

Songs like Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord and Day By Day became hits and Godspell was one of the biggest successes on Broadway.听

Meanwhile, Stephen Gately has proved his ability since leaving Boyzone with West End hits in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Joseph.

This tour of Godspell will be launched at the Key before heading nationwide.听 Michael Cross, the Key's Artistic Director, says he's delighted to be working on the co-production.

The show runs from 11th to 22nd September at the Key Theatre, Peterborough.
