Nick Fairbairn

Nick's a local boy with the local sporting knowledge to match his glamorous roots. Listen in to Monday Sport from 6 - 7pm, Sportstalk on Fridays from 6 to 7pm and Saturday Sport from 2 to 6pm.

Q: Give us a potted history of your life so far.

A: Born and bred in the area, I went to school in Cambridge and started reporting on Cambridge City for the station at the age of 15 - did that for four years until I went to University in Nottingham - enjoyed a productive and slightly blurry time in Notts, a bit of travelling, then back to Cambridge to work full time.

Q: If you could choose your own name what would it be and why?

A: Frank - after Mr Sinatra, what a legend!

Q: What was the last thing that made you laugh until you cried a litte bit?

A: Listening to the blooper files including Andy Abbot's toilet incident - priceless, it will be aired one day!

Q: What are your favourtie sports, who do you follow and what do you play?

A: I still enjoy a kick around in the Sunday league if I can make it out of bed for the 10.30 kick off. Footy and cricket have to be the favourite sports, but I've got well into the Speedway in the last few years and follow the Peterborough Panthers….Newcastle are my footy team (no-one mention silverware).

Q: What makes you angry?

A: Overpaid sportsmen moaning about their lot, arrogance, people who aren't polite - and the under-acheivement of the England football team despite having such a handy crop of players.

Q: In a fire what would you rescure first?

Call me sentimental but probably my photos - good memories are irreplaceable, although my mobile phone is priceless as well!

Q: Who are your heroes/inspirations?

A: Alan Shearer is a hero, a Newcastle legend and one of the best of the old " English centre forwards," Bobby Moore for obvious reasons, a good reminder of when footballers only cared about the game….Ìý Richie Benaud is an inspiration, the best commentator ever as far as I'm concerned. Impartial,Ìý brilliant delivery and timing with his comments, and a gent as well!

Q: Tell us about your most embarrassing moment, ever.

A: Falling off my chair in assembly at school was a killer - going over in front of 700 people with a loud crash is not a good look. And saying that Andy Murray won in straight sex instead of sets while doing a tennis report on air. Andie Harper's retort, "we can talk about straight sex if you like" cue the blushes.

Q: How do you relax?

A: Relaxing on a beach with my girlfriend is a favourite and a beer garden on a hot day with a group of my best mates is hard to beat.

Q: What phrases or words do you tend to say too often?

A: " To be fair". I say it all the time, it’s a bad habit from interviewing footballers and managers.
