'Tourist in Your Own Town' explores the delights in the Royston area!

Jan Reynolds
Our first Tourist in Your Own Town takes us north from Royston to discover how the most famous landscape designer of all left his print on our county. To provide a wonderful contrast, we're also exploring the RSPB nature reserve at Fowlmere.

There are many tourist attractions in south Cambridgeshire, but Jan has discovered two places that are free, full of wonderful wildlife and aren't the usual tourist haunts...

Even before you reach the long driveway to Wimpole Hall, you can see some of the wonderful parkland designed by Lancelot "Capability" Brown.听With rolling hills, and magnificent ancient trees casting their shadow over grazing rare-breed sheep, the National Trust's parkland at Wimpole is quite simply stunning whatever time of year you visit.听

Endless space to run free

Entrance to the park is completely free, and it is open from dawn to dusk, so you can enjoy the early morning sun or the lazy, hazy end to the day.听 There's endless space for children to run free, and if you can find the energy, a walk uphill to the Gothic-style folly will give you a postcard view down to the Hall itself.听We finished off our visit to Wimpole with a scrumptious tea in the Stable Block, and a wander around the used book shop and plant stall... just a little tempting.

Beds of sky-high reeds

Wander by the waters at RSPB Fowlmere.

If you travel a few miles south east of Wimpole you'll find the RSPB's nature reserve at Fowlmere.听 Magical, mystical, or just nature at its strangest, the spring water bubbling out from the chalk will captivate children, and inspire gardeners!听 The board walks will lead you through beds of sky-high reeds, waving in the breeze, and you can creep into one of the hides to look out for some of the birdlife.听 Even if you don't see it, you might well hear it, as the warblers call out across this wetland.听 If you're weary of town life, this is a place of calm to refresh your senses and slow your pace for a while.

The Reserve is open at all times and entrance is free, but donations in the RSPB box are requested. For more information visit the RSPB website:

Audrey Wylfing
Royston Cave is indeed fascinating, and does indeed hold the secret of the Holy Grail. Kind regards, Audrey

Dermot Byrne
What about the Royston Cave, the best kept secret in the UK. Underground chamber created by the Templars and covered in carvings

Cambridge Explorer
Quite agree with Royston Crow. Royston has fascinating links with the Knights Templar & the crusades - how could you write about Royston and miss this?

Royston Crow
But it says nothing about Royston at all!! Why not call the article "Tourist in the bit in between Cambridge and Royston" it would be a lot more accurate.
