Whilst getting to Heathrow proved easier than expected, any possibilities of international travel were much more difficult. We got free single tickets to London, and the London tube staff let us take the Piccadilly Line all the way to Heathrow without any trouble. It was only at Heathrow that the problems started. Our ultimate aim being to get to Indonesia, we headed straight to Terminal 3 to explain our position to the airlines. Other Jailbreakers had clearly got there first, since the first airline we asked wouldn’t even let us explain what we were trying to do before telling us that it was airline policy to never give any flights away free. We had this response from most airlines we tried, with many telling us that they couldn’t help us since they were unable to give away tickets on the day of travel, but we might have had more success had we contacted their marketing departments in advance. This advice was especially frustrating since we had spent the past two weeks trying to get through to various marketing departments with no success! We were determined not to give up and spent the whole day calling marketing departments and pleading our case to the (not very sympathetic) airline staff.Ìý We thought we had hit it lucky with a couple of companies, who initially seemed willing to help us but the people we spoke to were unable to authorise free tickets themselves, and eventually they also rejected our requests. After a whole day in Terminal 3 we decided to try our luck in a different terminal, but were met with the same abrupt refusals. It was disappointing that, despite being informed by the ticket desks that there were a great many empty seats on flights to Jakarta, ‘airline policy’ prevented us from obtaining them. It is of course understandable that they are unable to give free flights to everyone that asks; it was the refusal to consider individual cases that we found frustrating. Not everyone was so uncharitable, and we were very grateful for all the free coffee and meals we were offered at the airport. An American woman even gave us her cookies since she thought it was the best way she could help! But all the free food in the airport was not going to get us to Indonesia, and by Friday night this was very clear. Tired and disappointed, we headed for home.
