The Nene Valley Railway once formed an important cross-country route from East Anglia to the Midlands. It opened to the public in 1845, and was closed by British Rail in 1966, but thanks to a restoration programme which saw the railway re-open to the public in 1977, you can step back in time and enjoy railway travel in style once more. At Wansford Station, the home of the NVR, you can see an extensive collection of British and Continental Locomotives, while some of the railway's historic goods wagons can be seen adjacent to both Ferry Meadows and Peterborough stations. There are many country walks from and between all of the NVR's stations, why not walk one way and catch the train back! Both Ferry Meadows and Orton Mere give access to the extensive Country Park which has miles of footpaths, and plenty of room for children to let off steam. One of the NVR's most popular attractions is Thomas, who returned this year after a refurbishment costing nearly 拢100,000.
