Bristol's wealth was built on slavery Abolition 2007 - an embarrassing truth?Bristol poet Lawrence Hoo's poem 'Abolition 2007' looks at how the anniversary of the abolition of the Slavery Act is being marked both in his home city and around the UK. In it he questions whether the act to abolish slavery made any difference at all to the lives of thousands of displaced Africans and Afro Caribbeans. He also looks at Bristol's slaving past and how the city's wealth was created on the back of human suffering. But the poem Abolition 2007 also has a very positive message - Lawrence turns his thoughts to how society can learn from the past to finally put an end to slavery.
