Temple Meads Brunel artwork unveiled

A huge sculpture celebrating the life and work of Brunel has been unveiled at Bristol's Temple Meads station. The work involved nine artists and has been 12 months in the making.

Lead artist Stephen Joyce and members of Art + Power - an organisation of disabled artists - began researching the life and achievements of the engineering great in September 2005.

Through a series of 30 workshops they came up with drawings and images reflecting Brunel's triumphs - and occasional disasters!

The workÌý - a 3D mural - features a series of aluminium plates cut into shapes and printed with images inspired by Brunel's sketchbooks.

It will grace platform one of Temple Meads railway station which was designed and built by Brunel in 1840.

"This has been a complex and difficult project, that at times seemed unlikely to succeed," said Jade West, project coordinator.

"But the sense of risk, working through the difficulties and overcoming the technical problems has embodied the spirit of Brunel."

The unveiling of the sculpture - funded by Brunel 200 and Network Rail - formed part of the grand finale to Brunel bicentenary celebrations in Bristol.

The work had to be installed overnight

The city's Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress led the ceremony - on 16 September, 2006, accompanied by 70 members of Bristol Sinfonia.
