The Avon Gorge and Downs Wildlife Project is teaming up with Avon Wildlife Trust, the National Trust and the Forestry Commission, to put on the ‘Gorge-ous wildlife family fun day’. Families will be able to follow either a woodland trail in Leigh Woods or a grassland trail on the Downs. At the start of their chosen trail each participant will pick get a Gorge ‘passport’.Ìý Along the trail, participants will meet costumed wildlife experts, dressed as everything from a peregrine falcon to a Bristol onion and badger to a woodsman.Ìý

The challenge is to ensure that passports are stamped by each character and clues hidden along the trail correctly answered to win a prize at the end! As well as the trails other fun things to do including storytelling and craft activities will be on offer. Avon Gorge is home to many rare plants and animals, including the lollipop-shaped wildflower the Bristol onion and the Bristol whitebeam tree, both of which are found nowhere else in the UK.Ìý Families can start their chosen trail anytime between 11am and 3pm. The trails follow circular routes and take up to 1½ hours to complete. The event is free but donations are welcome on the day. People wanting to come along must book in advance by calling 01594 833057, as places are limited. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Full details, including where the trails start, how to get there and public transport information will be given when you book. Access on both trails is suitable for people of all ages. The Downs trail is on level, grassy terrain.Ìý The Leigh Woods trail is on hard surfaces suitable for both prams and wheelchairs.Ìý |
