What to wear in Bradford!By Faye Kenny Ever spent all morning trying to figure out what to wear...and what not to wear? Yeah, me too! I've been walking the streets of Bradford asking people in the city for their dos and don'ts on the latest styles... What's hot and what's not...OK, let's face it, Bradford isn't exactly Milan, New York or Paris, and we don't have a Selfridges or Harvey Nichols. But this week I was determined to find normal people out there with normal fashion tips so everybody can know what's hot and what's not in Bradford. Not quite Johnny Cash! So where was I to start? Well, walking around the city centre didn't help much, with a sea of 'chaved out' youths dressed to the nines in their dirty trainers, and socks (nicely pulled over the tracksuit bottoms, of course!) I mean, don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with the whole chav look but, but it would be nice to see a few more people in Bradford that have dared to be different! I'm not alone!I decided to ask the people of Bradford what they thought of fashion in Bradford, or the lack of it. The first to answer my questions was Ben Harvey, 18, who works selling the likes of Henry Lloyd and Paul and Shark - both culprits for providing chavs and chavettes with the latest gear. He says: "There's nowhere to go clothes shopping in Bradford. We have to go to other cities, that's how bad it is!" Ben told me that the bestsellers in the store were all the 'chavy' labels, and how a lot of these get shoplifted on a regular basis! He also spoke to me about a new shopping centre that's to be built here in Bradford: " I think once they get on with it, it'll bring something new and fashionable to Bradford." Lisa at work, talking fashion! Yippee! After a good hour walking the streets of Bradford, I managed to spot somebody who looked 'different'. My 22-year-old diamond-in-the-rough was Dominic Al-Samarraie. "Hooray!" I said to myself, although his outfit wasn't something I would pick out, at least he looked different. Wearing the ever so fashionable skinny jeans, some fancy boots and a bright blue T-shirt, he told me he was a clothes designer!: "I feel Bradford is quite closed-minded when it comes to fashion. I was out the other night and someone called me Johnny Cash!" See, that's exactly what I'm talking about. So maybe people are scared to look different because of what others will say? I remember wearing THAT when I was at school!Lisa Foers, a 37-year-old sales assistant, told me: "Working in a shop you do see another side to fashion in Bradford because the same fashion conscious people come in on a regular basis, so I see more than if I was just walking the streets of Bradford." We discussed what was in fashion now and agreed that skinny jeans had been doing well this year but, I have to admit, skinny jeans are not being worn by me! Skinny jeans are great for more slimline figures and can sometimes be worn by the wrong people. Lisa agreed that many fashions don't work for different people, so you have to find something similar and adapt the style so that works for you: "A lot of the things people are wearing now are things I wore when I was at school, so everything eventually gets a comeback!" And I'm sure you've heard something similar to that before! Bringing Hong Kong fashion to Bradford! From Hong Kong to BradfordMy next stop was Kirkgate Market, where I met fashion guru Azra who set up Oriental Fashions two years ago. Azra said: "Bradford is so behind! I bring fashion accessories from Hong Kong to Bradford so my shop is very popular with people interested in being up to date with the latest fashions." It was nice to see a blend of eastern and western fashions in Azra's shop and it proved to be popular with the amount of people making purchases whilst I was there. Is the future bright? The future for fashion in Bradford can only get brighter I'm sure. With more and more developments going on in the city, although they may seem to take a year and a day to so get started, at least something is being done! So I guess we just have to sit and wait patiently...and dare to be different in the mean time! last updated: 14/09/07 SEE ALSOYou are in: Bradford and West Yorkshire > Blast > What to wear in Bradford! |
