Ah, this is what the show is all about then! Competition between the farmers and their prized farm animals. Exciting?! Stood on the door (well, at some hay bails which made the 'door') were a couple of your stereotypical farmers. Wellies, flat hats, Border Collies and听thick Yorkshire accents! Nice chaps, although I could tell they were asking themselves what a girl with short spiky hair and a vibrant dress was doing there.

Stepping onto the field was like stepping into a bog. Really, I do love the countryside no matter what you may think, but I did lose a shoe! And was this really a place where I could find ART? After all it's art I'm supposed to be reporting on for the 成人快手 West Yorkshire website. However, as soon as I stepped foot in the first marquee I was granted my wish. Result! The tent was brimming with little stalls, each one selling different crafts, homemade foods and art work. I was starving so made my way to the food stall and sampled most of the cakes and biscuits. But these weren't the normal buns and cookies you buy at supermarkets - oh no! One particular cake was designed to look like Hansel and Gretel's cottage in the woods. Eating it would have been a shame because so much work had gone into making it. The lady who had made it told me it had taken her a full day to make it look that brilliant and really she didn't want anyone to buy it, only to eat it!
| Welcoming us to the show..Woof! |
The rest of the stalls were full with wooden carvings, candles, stitched cards, bookmarks, jewellery, bags, hats, belts, and best of all patterned wellies. See, farmers can be stylish! I chatted to most of the stall owners and found out that most of them lived and worked in Halifax and the local villages around the town. It was nice to see them all together. The stuff in the next tent made me laugh the hardest. The sign outside made me think I was going to see a line up of super sized vegetables. How thrilling! I was half right although there was a major twist. Art had been injected into these vegetables. The one that stuck out the most was an aubergine. It had been carved out and made to look like a pirate ship. It had oars, sails and even a wheel. Not quite 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. More like 'Pirates of the Halifax Show' minus Johnny Depp! But what about the animals? It was obvious that the cows in competition were a little unsettled and caused a lot of chaos. The whole field erupted into loud moos, triggering off all the sheep in the pens opposite to bleat like mad. It was like a farm animal orchestra!
| To think I lifted one of these! |
Considering I class myself as a bit of country bumpkin, I was really shocked to see听all these different types of cows and sheep. One type of cow had really, really short legs and a massive body! Strange looking creature. I had a bit of a giggle when the bulls came out. One of them was so unbelievably enormous that it couldn't fit through the opening to get into the judging pen. It was huuuuge! But its not what you're thinking! The best part of my day would have to be the hay bailing competition. I found this was an art in itself!听 I had to get the hay bail on a pitch fork and launch it up in the air over a set height. If I managed the height set it was moved up higher. I didn't, of course, and felt really embarrassed when all the farmer boys managed to chuck their bails at least 10 metres high! Need to practice that for the next hay bailing season. Overall I had an amazing day but, above all, it goes to show that you can find art everywhere! |
