Dalek @ Experience TV
A Dalek's gotta have fun!

"A wicked experience!"

By Blast! Reporter Esther Miller
Experience TV at the National Museum of Film and Television in Bradford is a new gallery which will showcase a world class television collection, never before seen by the public and also let you get hands on and experience TV behind the scenes!

Being a 成人快手 Blast reporter means that I have the chance to go to new openings such as Experience TV. I was part of the very first tour around the new exhibition which was cool! I found the Experience TV tour really interesting because I eventually want to pursue a career in television and film...

The first thing on the tour is an example of the different stages gone through before material is broadcast to the TV sets in people's homes. Three different places of TV production are available to explore and they're set up like the real workplaces, even though they look slightly tidier than the one I'm working in! Well, I suppose they aren't really getting used! The post-production office has papers scattered on the desk which give it a sense of creativity as this is where the ideas are born.

The ideas are then sent on to the next set which is designed to resemble a house where a drama performance could take place. The modern cameras, TV screens and lighting surrounding the set give it a real feel of what a film or TV set looks like. It was really good that I could walk onto the set and see myself on the screens, or work behind the camera if you are a little camera shy like me!

The TV 'gallery' grabbed my attention the most. I really liked it that I had the opportunity to control the images transmitted onto the screens and that I could play around with sound levels and add audio effects. The chance to be interactive with the equipment was a plus for me because it gave me an insight to the basics of television production.

I like the mocked-up news studio because, like before, it let me take part and act out a news report. The news story flashed up on an autocue as it would in a professional studio.

The virtual studio also looked fantastic. The advanced technology meant that I could choose from either a collection of fantasy or realistic backgrounds and act out whatever I fancied. Virtual studios are becoming more popular because they are cheaper and have more options at hand. I would also really like to have worked with the editing and audio software because the chance to manipulate clips and sound would have been my idea of fun!

I thought the method used to show us how images are sent to our televisions was ace. You can choose from one of the four transmission techniques and watch how it actually works by following little blinking lights to a real TV set.

I was already very interested in the history of television so the displays, along with the background information, meant that I learned how its development progressed and who created what, where and when. It did help that I had a tour guide who covered any information that wasn't mentioned in the display notes! I thought this part of the tour was more educational and historically-based. I liked the way the displays were in chronological order of television and camera development.

"It wasn't what I expected at all but it has definitely been a wicked experience!"

I was surprised by the huge collection of TVs and the oodles of different designs made over the years. To show a comparison to the early, old fashioned, televisions a shiny modern flat screen TV has been put up. Some of the old televisions were gigantic, which is funny when you consider that they could only receive one channel! I did want to take the orange sphere TV made in the 80s home with me because I think they are very chic. I was faced with a slight problem though. It was suspended to the ceiling and I couldn't quite reach it!

Because I eventually want to work behind a camera I really took an interest when I came to the camera exhibition. The old cameras are massive and I was told some of them took more than one person to operate them because of their size and weight.

Crossing over the gallery took me to the second part of Experience TV. It's completely different from the first. This part of the exhibition is about how television programmes and images can affect the audience. There is a bit about how many people tuned into classic programmess such as the first winner on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? and the final of Pop Idol. Snippets of these classic programmes are shown on a big screen to refresh people's minds. The audience figures for these programmes are shocking and made me realise that television has a massive influence on our lives.

It was interesting to see a clear timeline of the expansion of television with the introduction of Channel Four, Channel Five, Sky etc because I can remember when they first became available. I undoubtedly cheered that I had more channels to watch!

The best part of the tour by far, in my opinion, was TV Heaven. This part of the exhibition is about different TV programmes over the years including cartoons and soaps like Grange Hill. As I've had a slightly unhealthy obsession with cartoons since I was little, walking into a room full of cartoon characters from my childhood was brilliant. It was cool that some of the fluffy puppets on show were actually the originals used.

TV Heaven has four 'pods' where you can sit and watch your favourite cartoons or soap episodes from the past to the present. The film library has more than 1000 entries and is expanding so you'll probably find something you want to watch!听

In general I think that Experience TV is awesome and very interesting. It wasn't what I expected at all but it has definitely been a wicked experience. I do think that there is a lot of information to take it but it's been presented in a clever and entertaining way.
