Why is Islam so attractive to Westerners?

Ros Atkins Ros Atkins | 14:08 UK time, Tuesday, 11 September 2007

We are now off air, but you can follow the debate by reading the comments below.

Welcome to Robert in the Fiji Islands who's definitely the first person there to subscribe to the WHYS Daily Email. There are enough things to talk about today to warrant two emails and a three hour show, so straight into it...

OSAMA - DOES HIS BRAND OF ISLAM APPEAL TO THE WEST?
A number of issues have been raised by . He appeals to Westerners to turn to Islam. Now whether he is inspiring people or not, Islam is growing rapidly in the West. If you're a convert, what was the attraction and what is your view of Osama's brand of Islam.

The second point is one Chris in LA wants us to ask - should the vidoes be shown or does the media give Osama too much help in spreading his message? The third, is that there is plenty of discussion of the fact that Osama had died his beard and whether Islam allows this. Much to talk about.

WOULD YOU CLEAR BEGGARS, BUSKERS AND HAWKERS OFF THE STREETS?
You shouldn't find many of them in Jakarta in the next few months. The authorities have decided to . You'll also be in trouble if you hand over money to anyone asking for it. Would you like the same measures in your country?

MORE STORIES THAT MAY MAKE THE SHOW...
HAVE YOU GOT 9/11 FATIGUE?

James from WHYS noticed the large online response to the issue of whether 9/11 commemorations need to be scaled back.

PART TWO
He'll face Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama amongst others today. As he addresses Congress feel free to send your analysis.

ANYONE FOR ARMS?
There's a massive arms fair this week and plenty of people are none too impressed. Does the arms trade need to get its house in order, or even cease to exist? Or do these protestors need to accept that without arms, there would be very little order in the world.

NAWAZ SHARIF'S SHORT STAY
He was on Pakistani land for before being sent to Saudi Arabia. Does he deserve to be moved on?
Here's the story.

BLOG PROBLEMS
This email came from Kathy in Australia: 'Dear Ros. Why when I try to post does it come with 'you are not allowed to post'? I don't understand why this would happen. Could you please explain to me what is going on? I am flabbergasted!!!!'

I'm afraid the short answer is that I can't explain. Our blog is far from as reliable as we would like and often when a lot of you are posting at once, it decides to take a breather and it's very irritating. If you try again the chances are it'll get through, if that doesn't work, email me and I'll put your comment up. Sorry I know it's a pain. I'd promise a quick fix but there's no sign of that.

Speak to you later.
