Is London the best role model for a multicultural city?
The ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ World Service is launching "London Week" between 18-25th August. Seven days of special programming dedicated to showcasing the best of the capital city we broadcast from.
World Have Your Say is attempting something ambitious on 24th August. London, Sydney, New York and Toronto all claim to be the world's most multicultural city - but who is right? We decided to find out. So we're simulcasting with four radio stations in each of these cities...
...Perhaps London's biggest challenger is Toronto. The Canadian city has been recognised by the United Nations as the most "multicultural city in the world" on numerous occasions. But try that line in New York and you'll be laughed at. Queens is the most multicultural borough in the US, and possibly the world. And who's to say Sydney doesn't have a chance to claim the title? People of 180 different nationalities live in the Australian city, speaking over 140 different languages.
Our very own Ros will be the ringmaster - broadcasting live, as usual, from the studios of Bush House.
's Christina Cherneskey will be flying the flag for Toronto at 1300 local time.
In Manhattan, lifetime New Yorker Leonard Lopate will be fighting his city's corner at 1300 local time on the .
While over in Sydney, Rod Quinn gets the people of Australia talking on at 0300 on Saturday.
In our central London studio, Eddie Nestor and Kath Melandri will be in the chair on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ London 94.9FM at 1800 local time, speaking to callers.
Don't forget - if you're not in these cities - you can always call in on the usual number and tell us why your place of residence should be held as the multicultural example for the rest of the world.
At the end of the show, we'll ask some of our regular WHYS listeners who, having heard the debate, will give their verdict on who deserves to be the winner of our entirely unscientific poll.
It promises to be an exciting and lively debate. Next week we'll hear from representatives from each of the featured cities.
But let's get the conversation started right now - which multicultural city is the best role model? Get posting now!
I'm off to make sure all the technical bits 'n' bobs are in place ... Thank goodness for ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ studio managers!
