Should plastic bags be banned?

Ros Atkins Ros Atkins | 14:45 UK time, Tuesday, 1 May 2007

It's May Day and the weather's so warm and breezy I almost feel like putting on some clogs and getting a Maypole set up in the office. Sadly, our little shoe box doesn't quite have the space.

Here are today's topics...

DID THE UK SECURITY SERVICES DO ENOUGHY TO STOP 7/7?
Look around the press today in the UK and you'll see as much analysis of the fact that security services failed to pick up the 7/7 bombers as you will of the conviction of 5 men with plans for mass murder. though at the moment the government's saying no.

Should more have been done? And is it ever realistic to monitor every potential threat?

SHOULD PLASTIC BAGS BE BANNED?
I'd like to ban them from my house where we seem to have more plastic bags than anything else. Too guilty to throw them away, far too many to put them all to good use, and being told by the local council that we can't recycle them. Believe me, I spend a lot of time thinking about this. Anyway…

All the shops in one town in the UK have decided on environmental grounds, and there's been a massive response to the story online, so we're going to pick it up.

Should plastic bags be banned altogether, should we be charged for them, or should we find better things to worry about?

WAS WOLFOWITZ RIGHT TO STAND HIS GROUND?
Details of Paul Wolfowitz's defence of his conduct and his right to continue as president of the World Bank started coming through during yesterday's show. He says the charges against him are 'bogus' and that he's a victim of a "smear campaign".

Here's the story: https://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6607913.stm

ARE YOU THE KENYAN WHYS LISTENER WHO WANTED TO DRIVE A THOUSAND MILES TO SEE US?
It's unlikely too many of you will answer yes to that question, but we're trying to get in touch with a WHYS listener in northern Kenyan who texted us a few months ago to say he'd drive to Nairobi if we ever came. Well we'll be there in a few weeks and we want to make sure he knows. If you're that person, get in touch - we'd love to meet you.

Speak to you later.

Plastic bag pollution is very deadly and takes hundreds of years to break down. Even if the component is broken done, the deadly chemicals will go into the ground and water system. By reducing the usage of plastic bag, Earth can recuperate. That's why cotton bags should be used world wide to help reduce the pollution.
It is our generation to stop the pollution and start using as the solution. With global warming going out of hand from gas exhaustion, we don't need any more problems especially plastic bags that are harmful when broken down naturally. These broken down elements cause sickness and destruction to the air, soil and water system.
Use cotton canvas bags starting today as a way to stop the plastic pollution that is becoming a major threat to the environment. Our lives are threatened ever more from the growing usage of plastic bags. It is time you bring a canvas bag to shopping the next time you go to a supermarket.
