Can you ever totally protect your children?

Anu Anand | 13:56 UK time, Friday, 11 May 2007

madeleine.jpgRos is busy packing his bags for Africa, so I have the pleasure of being with you today and a couple of days next week. On today's show, we're discussing how far parents should go to protect their children?

Three-year-old Madeleine McCann was taken at a holiday resort in Portugal while her parents were having dinner nearby. Portuguese police called off the search today, although a British businessman, moved by her parent's anguish, has offered a reward of two million dollars for any information. It's been a big story all over Europe, but has brought up issues close to the heart of any parent....

How far do you go to protect your own children? Can you ever worry too much?

Also, some people, like the Times of London columnist , have criticised the amount of coverage Madeleine's case has received. He asks:

"When did child abduction become a spectator sport? Who benefits from seeing daily pictures of Madeleine McCann’s distraught mother clutching her missing child’s toy? And why are many experts and authorities preying on our fears to promote their own agenda?"

Others of you ask: Is it because she is blond and her parents are photogenic? Would a poor parent, or a single parent or a black parent whose child went missing get as much sympathy and media attention?

Let us know by posting here on the blog, or by email, text or by calling in. We'll also be sharing more of your messages for our colleague Alan Johnston, still missing in Gaza and we'll hear from Canada, where hundreds of people gathered yesterday to show their solidarity.
