Are children a help or a hindrance to success in a woman's life?

Paul Coletti | 15:30 UK time, Wednesday, 2 May 2007

I joined this morning's meet via telephone but I could feel the agony as we debated how to pull together all the talking points. It wasn't easy but somehow we've arrived at a consensus. The debate centred around an Australian senator's description of a female politician as "deliberately barren" . . .

The deliberations were sparked by story from Australia, story from the UK and story from France.

So we had the Aussie senator describing a colleague as "deliberately barren", a Times columnist (see picture) decrying the lack of women in public debate (something we are aware of on WHYS) and Sarko alluding to Sego's femininity which all, in their own way alluded, to women in the workplace.

Not forgetting of course the prominence many women enjoy in public life today: Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Liberia's first female PM, Angela Merkel in Germany and . . well . . I was about to add Kate Moss the model, but according to , this isn't the kind of public role in which she thinks women are under-represented. What do you think?

So we've tied all these disparate but related threads into a debate on motherhood and its role in a successful life.

What do you think about the senator's comments that a childless female politician is unfit to govern? Can a woman understand people better if she has children? Are children a help or a hindrance to success in a woman's life?

As ever you can join the debate by posting a comment below. We look forward to hearing from you at 6pm BST.
