Helen in Virginia

Ros Atkins Ros Atkins | 15:12 UK time, Monday, 22 January 2007

I live on two wooded acres in Westmoreland County, Virginia, within walking distance of the Potomac River. Our beautiful county is very rural, but quite historic, as it was the birthplace of Presidents George Washington and James Monroe and also of Civil War General Robert E. Lee.

I retired in 2005 after 40 years of teaching high school Spanish and English as a Second Language. I’m currently an adjunct professor of Spanish at the community college, an avid gardener, I sail, and I volunteer as a Spanish interpreter at a free clinic in a nearby town.

WHYS is very special to me because, as a language teacher, I am delighted to hear the opinions of people from all over the world who are multilingual and have mastered English.

The communicative competence of the WHYS listeners is truly impressive. The topics discussed are enlightening and informative. This is a marvellous forum where people from every corner of the world can discuss issues of great importance to all of us.

With so many serious conflicts in the world, it is crucial that we continue talking to one another.
