Talking about...Pinochet, Zidane and living abroad

Rabiya Parekh | 15:02 UK time, Monday, 11 December 2006

Chile's former military leader Augusto Pinochet died in hospital aged 91.Hi I'm Rob Watson. This is the first time I've presented this programme. Help! No seriously it should be fine shouldn't it?

Anyway here's what we thought we'd talk about today..

Pinochet

First off, is the passing of Augusto Pinochet at the weekend at the age of 91.

Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in celebration in Santiago on Sunday almost immediately after news circulated of the death of the former dictator.

But within hours the revelry was marred by violence, with confrontations breaking out and the police using tear gas and water cannons against a large group marching toward the presidential palace.

So what will be his legacy and what does his death mean for the future of Chile?

Zizu

Also Zinedine Zidane goes back to his roots - for the first time in 20 years the French soccer star is visiting Algeria.

For several years he was the greatest footballer in the world, but on the biggest stage of all, in his last ever game, the World Cup final in Berlin.... well, you know the rest. The Roman philosopher Seneca said that "there is no great genius without a touch of madness".

Zidane is a Frenchman of Algerian origin, born and raised in a tough quarter of a tough city, the southern port of Marseille. He is consistently voted 'the most popular Frenchman', in a country where African immigrants and their children are not always welcome, and he has rarely talked publicly about his roots.

If you live in Algeria we want to hear from you, do you welcome his visit?

Living abroad

And a subject I'd love to be talking about rather than doing the refereeing - living abroad. And on a cold, dark rainy afternoon in London living anywhere but here seems very attractive right now.

I'm not the only one thinking it, almost one in 10 British citizens now lives overseas, according to a study of people coming in and out of the UK.

Figures suggest that the rate of departure has been so great that population falls are only masked by immigration.

While Australia and Spain are the top locations, increasing numbers are heading to major Asian economies.

Wherever you live now, we want to hear from you. Have you moved to live abroad? Why did you relocate? Was it a wise move? Would you ever go back to your home country?
