Welcome to Cleveland
The welcome we've had here in Cleveland has been amazing - not a word i use lightly. It is undeniably rewarding to find that virtually everyone you meet here listens to WHYS - and a good few of them seem to like it.
Ros has just done an appearance on WCPN's "The Sound of Ideas" programme and the host asked for callers.
The lines lit up (not a phrase i use lightly either) and the callers told Ros what they thought of the programme and asked questions about how it is put together. Ros is of course taking a lot of stick for all the attention he's getting.
He's told me that he'll be accused of "presenter-itis" (a disease that afflicts presenters in the ego area- in extreme cases it can be fatal to a career) however he behaves and he's right, though to be fair he is handling it very well. He's even got a suit on. And it fits. He's come a long way from his days as a Cornish trawlerman and he's earned his moment of glory.
When Rabsy and i turned up at WCPN the security guard told us he loved the show and the lady on reception said she'd been answering calls for the last two days from people who wanted to come and see the programme but can't as it's "sold out". Both days.
I hope you'll forgive us enjoying this attention because in the early days of the show we had a fair bit of hostility from some of our listeners in the USA, including one station who dropped us after a few days, describing us as "³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Lite". So it's heartening to meet listeners who like what the programme is trying to do. I hope today's show justifies their faith.
We're on air in half an hour and i need to get Ros out of make up (he's having a manicure as well) to go through the opening of the programme. His PA tells me he'll be out when he's good and ready and not before.
Finally, i'd like to thank everyone at WCPN for their hospitality (the studio we're in today is amazing - oops) and also the Great Lakes Brewing Company for their exceptional ales. It's hard being on the road, it really is....
