Your questions: The World Cup on shortwave
I've looked for the answer myself, but I haven't found too many answers. But a couple of you have asked how to listen to the World Cup live on shortwave. One of our WHYS listeners does listen to the World Cup on shortwave. I'll send Roberto and e-mail and try to find out how he listens.
Read on for ways to follow the World Cup, and let me and everyone else know how you're listening and watching. Oh, and if you're there, you can always e-mail us your pictures.
Peter asked the question on an old post, ironically, about escaping World Cup madness. Far from escaping the madness, he wanted it live:
So, tell me on what Shortwave band setting do you get the live worldcup broadcast--in English? Live5 match coverage will not transmit via internet, as I understand it. So, AM radio is available only in a small area outside of the UK. SW is only recourse for real time coverage, if it exists at all. Thanks
Pete isn't the first person to ask. Justin Knapp in Boston also asked the same question:
Hey I am at work all day meaning I am missing most games. I have a shortwave radio. What frequency do I turn it on to get the live games? I am in Boston, MA. Anyone please help so I can stop missing these games. Cheers Justin
Ahh, good news, I was just looking at Roberto's old comments. He seems to have a solution:
I would like to add that since I cannot get the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ in the Internet for the World Cup, I will be listening to Univision [the US Latin TV Station] and Deutsche Welle [on my Shortwave Radio] for live games.
Excelent, Deutsche Welle, which has an English service, appears to be broadcasting the games live on shortwave. Here are from their website. I'm not so sure. I can't see live games on their programme schedule. Unfortunately, my shortwave radio is in a storage locker in Maryland in the United States with the bulk of my worldly possessions.
Other ways to watch and listen
If you're in the UK, you can watch and listen online. All those . However, on viewing rights. They have been resistant until this year to allow any rebroadcast online apart from a few pay-per-view portals. I remember four years ago, ponying up some cash to watch the games on It saved me from staying up all night to watch games in 2002.
