Any suggestions for England music?

paul_atherton.gifIBC, MUNICH 鈥 Every week we receive hundreds of emails about music used on 成人快手 Sport coverage. Here assistant producer Sarah Williams explains the process behind picking a piece of music.

sarah203.jpg

One of the most enjoyable jobs as an assistant producer is choosing music for features and montages. It鈥檚 not as easy as you would think though! Sometimes it鈥檚 important to pick a track with suitable lyrics, but sometimes instrumental music works better.
I recently spent two days trying to find an appropriate piece of music for an England montage. In the end I chose a track called 鈥楤est Days鈥 by new band . It contains the lyrics, 鈥淪o come alive, seize the time, these could be the best days of our lives鈥. Often classical or film soundtracks are ideal for the World Cup. They can stir up a lot more emotion.
One of my colleagues Steve Lyle picked a track from the film Crash to accompany his review of the tournament so far. It proved very popular with the viewers and .
Traditional music from a particular country often works better than pop or rock (the Germans might not agree!) as it gives you a flavour of the culture. We tend to pick the music first, and then cut the pictures to it. The music can give you inspiration and creative ideas editorially. A fast track would obviously have a lot more quick cuts between images, whereas a slow track requires more super slow motion pictures.
mp3 players definitely make life much easier. On previous tournaments we have had to cart out our whole CD collection but now our luggage is much lighter and we can collate our music much easier!
Any suggestions for music for our next England montage?

Not sure if you can use unsigned bands and artists for the montages, but may I suggest some of my own tracks - very "montage", imagery, instrumental stuff. Try "Croydon Library" and "Never Alone remix" for starters....

Ode to Isis by ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead would be a good one, never heard it used anywhere on UK tv yet, altho I think maybe the NBA did use it last year for the start of games. It's perfect for these kind of montages and is certainly far less obvious than using anything from the new Sigur Ros album!!

Hello,

I have always hoped to see a montage with Magical Dream by 808 State (album 808:90) as the words used in it convey both dissapointment and joy.
Plus it has the great ending line which is:
"Come with us and have no fear, just close your eyes and disappear".

I imagine this end being perfect with that slow motion image of a player closing his eyes in disappointment after missing the penalty that sees his side going out of the competition.

There is a fantastic track by a band called Dirty Vegas, called "Human Love." I'm a fan anyway, but found the lyrics particularly pertinent after watching us win the Ashes last year:

"When you've waited for so long,
To be where you are and
where you're coming from.
When you gave it all so much
In return for human love."

It's got a great strings arrangement on it, and the melody can be interpreted as either uplifting or sadly reflective. Good for either eventuality: lifting the trophy or being cruelly denied by a dodgy decision / the lottery of penalties...

There's only one track you should use when England progress to the Quarter Finals and that's JOHN PARR VS TOMMYKNOCKERS: 'NEW HORIZON'.

I'll be where the eagle's flying, higher and higher.'

AWESOME FOR WHEN ENGLAND STEAM PAST ECUADOR AND INTO THE QUARTERS WITH A COMMANDING PERFORMANCE!

His track called "Shaken" is quite energetic and would accompany shots of balls blasting in goals/misses/errors really well and he'd remix it to suit your needs to !!!

www.myspace.com/raggylad and click on the track called shaken.

Other than that...Bob Segers "Hollywood Nights" is a really powerful song of hope and nostalgia...builds to a strong ending too.

Hi, how about 'Stay/Far away so close' by U2. The only reason why is because the video for this song was shot in Belin around 1993. It's a cool underated song by U2. Might be appropriated for a sentimental perhaps farwell montage for Berlin (the 成人快手's base).

While I'm talking about U2 - Zoo Station, named after a railway station in Berlin. Also Zooropa - Bono even sings a line of German in this song 'Zooropa...vorsprung durch technik' (The opening lyric)

My favourite piece of football montage music was during the 2002 world cup (which I suggested at the time). Before Ireland's match against Spain, M.O.T.D showed a piece featuring the good days of Irish football with 'With or without you' as backing music - magic! Thanks again!

For those who feel they鈥檝e been mistreated
Discriminated, robbed or cheated

To win just once is their desire

To win just once against the odds

To race with speed along the track
Break the tape and not look back
To never have considered losing
As if to win is by your choosing
Bare you soul for all to find
An honest heart and an open mind

To Win just once
That would be enough
So come all ye fulltime smalltown heroes
Cast away your inbred fears of
Standing out from all the rest
The cynics and the pessimists
The self-indulgent almost rich
The blatant hurlers on the ditch
Time is passing so come on
And face the ball, the game is on

Shameless self-promotion i know but you certainly have our permission to use that. It is very upbeat and th elyrics are quirky and fun, and unlike Embrace they actually mention things like England, and Rooney etc etc!

I vote for a little known gem by Muse called "Shine Acoustic" on their Hullabaloo soundtrack. The opening verses have a hymnal quality with moments of sadness and beauty, perfect for that beleaguered Sweden game. Then it swells up powerfully into a dramatic (but not overdone reprise) before lifting the roof with hope and emotion. Bittersweet lyrics, perfect for both fuelling the dream and expressing the agony:

Who cares for the life we earned?
Someone sold all the truth you learned
Remember when you used to shine
And had no fear or sense of time?
When it creeps up on you

You can cry now there's nothing to feel
No one's noticed our loneliness
Remember when you should have teased
And made us scream eternal joy

I believe that you'll always be here
'Cause once you promised a life with no fear
Please don't break my ideals
And say what's fake was always real
Hope was the one
Now I'm gone
Take me back again

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go
To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star

This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far

To fight for the right
Without question or pause
To be willing to march into Hell
For a heavenly cause

And I know if I'll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star

we are now in the knockout stages, every second brings an intake of breath, an extra beat of the heart.
we need something that brings us together with a solidarity and determination.
My suggestion.

Holst: Mars - The bringer of war.

ps: great montage before the paraguay game, i loved it.

If you're looking for dramatic, choose some Godspeed You! Black Emperor or A Silver Mount Zion, although their scores can last quite a while. However, minutes 5-8 of 'Providence' off the album F# A# (Infinity) always strike a major chord if you want drama and poignancy joined together. Some Eno wouldn't go amiss, actually: 'Here Come the Warm Jets' off the self-titled album would be interesting as well.

Also, if you were to separate the lyrics about death and prostitution, 'Street Hassle' by Lou Reed would be absolutely ideal. Its use on the film The Squid and The Whale is first class. Again, a long one, but with some editing, would make any montage, negative or otherwise, last in the mind of the viewer for sometime. It would with me, anyway.

If you're after a song which would complement some quick editing and shots, then I would suggest 'Remember Me' by British Sea Power, off their debut album The Decline of British Sea Power. Fast paced, stirring, and the opening riffs coupled with the England team arriving out of the tunnel would go together fantastically well.

Sorry if I come across as a pretentious idiot, but I hope this helps. Overall, the 成人快手 get it spot on when it comes to music, and your choices more often than not, always raise a smile. However, anything can beat Kasabian's rendition of 'Heroes' on ITV: absolutely atrocious.

You gotta roll with it
You gotta take your time
You gotta say what you say
Don't let anybody get in your way
'Cause it's all too much for me to take

(Gerrard 2nd v T&T)
Don't ever stand aside
Don't ever be denied
You wanna be who you'd be
If you're coming with me

(Hislop face after that Gerrard goal)
I think I've got a feeling I've lost inside
I think I'm gonna take me away and hide
I'm thinking of things that I just can't abide

(A mix of Beckham, Rooney, lampard runs, etc)
I know the roads down which your life will drive
I find the key that lets you slip inside
Kiss the girl, she's not behind the door
But you know I think I recognize your face
But I've never seen you before

(More runs, tackles, getting bounced around etc..)
You gotta roll with it
You gotta take your time
You gotta say what you say
Don't let anybody get in your way
'Cause it's all too much for me to take

(Flashback through all the different cities/stadia England have played in..and will)
I know the roads down which your life will drive
I find the key that lets you slip inside
Kiss the girl, she's not behind the door
But you know I think I recognize your face
But I've never seen you before
(Final shot of the World Cup itself)

This song was played amongst others on all Liverpool's away trips on the road to Istanbul. Worked then for Gerrard & Co, put to pictures might it not do the same again for England....?

Any idea why my message has been removed? I posted a comment yesterday (actually, the first reply on the blog) and it's now gone! If it was for breaking "House Rules", I can't see how, as I was making a genuine suggestion for music for the montage. I'm an unsigned artist, and my music has been used for montage in a couple of sports videos already that have been on satellite tv. It's not as if I'm selling anything on the site...all my music on the site is free!

There are a couple of other links on the blog to people's own music, so I just wondered why mine was the only one to be removed.

William Orbit's (Barber's) adagio in strings-the trance bit, would be very effective on any montage-be it for positive or negative moments. I also think "Swallowed in the sea" by Coldplay is a good choice, particularly in a pre-match montage before the quarter finals-to have that to begin with to show all the sad/heart wrenching moments in the last 20 years, ie missed penalties, gascoigne's miss-all those years of heartache. This would act in perfect juxtaposition to a really uplifting song to immediately follow with all the positive moments of the last 20 odd years-to offer hope across the country for all-before kick off.

Or-a strange decision here-"I believe" (covered by robson and jerome) is one of the most positive songs I know and would be great in any montage-COS I KNOW WHY-I BELIEVE.

Brilliant, please read this I've been looking for this blog forever!!

'The' best song for when we go out (which I hope isn't too soon) is Richard Ashcroft - Lord I've been trying.
Such a stirring song, always makes me shiver. A slow starter which builds up with strings etc into a very powerful ballad. Great football references in the lyrics too, particularly when we've just been dumped out of the tournament on pens (probably). I can see the slo-mo montage now.
For example;

"Lord, I've been trying"

"Trying to keep myself from crying"

"And it gets hard"

"There's been some nights when I did a little lying" - For all the divers/cheats!!

"Sure feels like I've been here before" - For every England fan!

"Captain tell me where I've been",

"all these blues - they're never ending"

"And it gets hard, and life will go on again"

"Gonna shake off these blues, I'm leaving them now"

p.s. for Japan 2002 you should have used the first track off Ian Brown - Golden Greats (Getting High) - This track should have been used for the opening of every match perfect!!

Oh well, too late now. Give us a job!!

One more son
If you can hold on
If you can hold on, hold on

I wanna stand up, I wanna let go
You know, you know - no you don't, you don't

I want a meet you from the back of my broken hand

Another head aches, another heart breaks
I'm so much older than I can take
And my affection, well it comes and goes
I need direction to perfection, no no no no

Help me out - yeah
You know you got to help me out - yeah
Oh, don't you put me on the back burner
You know you got to help me out - yeah

I got soul, but I'm not a soldier

Over and in, last call for sin
While everyone's lost, the battle is won
With all these things that I've done

The slow intro lends itself to images of exquisite skill punctuated by rousing crescendos where our goals could be depicted. It then has as mooth but ponderous ending....

How about the track Nitty Gritty from the new Primal Scream album? Bobby G yelping "gonna get right down to the real nitty gritty" would be most apt now that the boys have reached the knock out stages. Mind you, I think he might be talking about y'know... doing it.

Or if the boys get sent home, maybe "Summer... it's gone" from Grandaddy's splendind posthumous longplayer "Just Like the Fambly Cat". I can just see pictures of Owen on his stretcher and Sven disappearing down a tunnel to the words "Summer, it's gone and I don't know, where everyone went or where I'll go." There's also a reference to crowds of fools which would work very nicely if you faded in footage of those chumps in their chainmail.

Thanks for asking and good luck with all those sausages.

The instrumental is very emotional and builds from slow to fast pace ideal for the winning goal when we beat Germany in the final.

I love Beckham he is so hunky!

Other songs by The Go! Team are always used on 成人快手 sports coverage like 'Junior Kickstart' and 'Panther Dash' but this is such a high tempo happy piece of instumental music that would be perfect.

if/when we go out, how about 'vapour trail' -

" First you look so strong,
Then you fade away.
The sun will blind your smile,
I watch you for a while.
You are a vapour trail,
In a deep blue sky.

Tremble with a sigh,
Glitter in your eye.
You seem to come and go,
I never seem to know.
And all my time,
Is yours as much as mine,
We never have enough,
Time to show our love..."

if we go out all guns blazing the original by ride would fit the bill perfectly, otherwise the more melancholy cover by trespassers william would be ideal...

If you're looking for cool montage music for next season's premiership coverage, look no further than my band "The Morning Side". We have a track called "Blind" which would be perfect for "Goal of the Month". We have an instrumental mix which would probably be better. Check it out, on our 'my space' profile.
