On iPM this week (podcast it here from Saturday morning) you have the chance to have Hugh Sykes do a report of your choice. Something local to you perhaps? Something global you care about...or a philosophical idea you'd like Hugh to explore. Email ipm@bbc.co.uk.

Last night on PM, Hugh brought us his latest report.

That's Roni Slatchayo. He says the village has gained nothing from the new stadium. The children just pose for pictures:

and one little girl blows me a kiss.

w12JPG.JPG

But there is a menaciong aspect to this story. Mayor Lassy Ciwayo says promises to the village were broken by the previous council administration.

w13.JPG

He has promised to put it right. But he has also received a death threat. A former colleague was murdered when he said he had evidence of corruption associated with tenders for the new stadium. Mayor Chiwayo is prepared to give evidence too. He is as well-protected as he can be. But, as he said, "There are 24 hours in a day.""

You may have read your morning paper and listened to the radio, and have some ideas you want to hear on PM tonight.

Perhaps you have a question about something in the news you would like answered - or better still, direct experience of something topical. Or maybe there's an aspect to a big story you haven't heard explored that you would like to hear.

The PM team will meet in a real glass box at 11am. Why not be part of the meeting by sharing your thoughts in this virtual glass box? We don't really look in after 11am so please be prompt! And if you want to simply drone on about something, please try somewhere else.

paddy2.JPG"I've just left the commentators' briefing. This is where organisers swap information with the 39 (yes 39) countries who've sent a commentator. Even Australia is here.

Each country supplies the correct pronunciation in advance of each of the three shows. So when the Croatian commentator stood up he had to pronounce and then translate the title "Lako Je Sve." It's pronounced as seen except the J is soft as in Y.

He offered the translation "Easy to see." Since there are so many languages in the room, the Norwegian asked if that meant easy as in beautiful / easy on the eye, or instead easy to see as in clearly visible.

More countries are singing in their own languages than in recent years. Historically, English is the language of more winning acts than any other, but there is real enthusiasm when artists stick with their native tongue.

It might be for that reason that we English speakers will be faced
with a choice when we get to the Swiss entry, Il pleut de l'or.
Should we opt for It's raining gold, or instead the simpler golden shower?"

They're at the Chelsea Flower Show, at the Eden Project's Places of Change garden, awarded a silver medal this morning by the Royal Horticultural Society, after an appearance on PM yesterday.

In the singlet is Paul Pulford, "Scruffy" to friends, garden co-designer, who credits horticulture with getting him off heroin and off the streets. He relished showing off the worms, at Chelsea to underline this show garden's biodiversity and wildlife. Next to him, Howard Jones, the Eden Project's director of human networks, was game, but a little less enthusiastic.

There's Mr Jones to the right walking off after the snaps were taken, Mr Pulford remained in the bodger's hut he and his team created. No news yet on whether the Queen has taken up his offer, made on last night's PM, to create a wildflower garden at Buckingham Palace.

It even seemed as if Ukraine's gas supply had been re-routed to the performance. It was a giant and spectacular show.

But in these financial times of woe, no country can stage such an event again. Moscow was probably the high-water mark of spangled splurge.

Norway is hosting a smart small stage using three experienced and funny hosts to take the mickey out of themselves. There's even a joke about ash, when in truth that Volcano threatened much about the show's preparations.

Many nations have such a parlous state of finances at home that this is probably
Wonderland. It's a brief moment of glee, which ends late on Saturday night, when the argument over who won and why will quickly give way to other concerns."

Helen is 36 and she really exists. I am trying to find out more about her, but I think she comes from Milton Keynes.

Norwegian organisers told me at the commentators' briefing that they wanted to remember that most viewers are NOT Norwegian. Norway has 4 million people, planet Eurovision is watched by 125 million. ( I added the word planet.)

So the focus is to remember Helen (poss from Milton Keynes) at all times. She is married with children, she's 36, and the show is designed with her and millions like her, in mind."

Music for Ice Cream Vans

Nigel writes: "A park in Norwich, a composer, seven borrowed ice cream vans (and a reporter).

ice2.jpg

Because, remarkably, these vans and their chimes form the orchestra for Mr Jones's new piece, Suburban Counterpoint (Music For Seven Ice Cream Vans).

All seven will tour the suburbs of Norwich this evening and tomorrow, playing the piece in relay. The idea is that you'll hear it wafting across the streets, meandering into your consciousness.

ice3.jpg

Dan Jones holds a map of where the vans are going while his sound engineer tells ice cream man Halil Topalcik (that's his back on the right) just what he's doing to his van.

It's part of the closing weekend of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival, on PM this evening, with a special mix, exclusive for us of the piece.

Favourite ice cream van tune anyone?"

She contacted iPM with this email:

"Hello.

So I don't know if any of your listeners (or collegues) can help me...

Saturday mornings, circa 1980, I would "help" Mum in the kitchen (I was 5) and she would be listening to Radio 4.

There was a particular theme tune, that featured a pipping flute. I know nothing about music, but I shall not let that stop me from trying to describe it!

The pipping flute would play down (1-2-3), up (1-2-3), down (1-2-3), up (1-2-3) and then a trill (with a falling note). It would repeat, then play the same refrain with higher notes and a dramatic fouth phrase.

The flute phrases would then be repeated with soaring strings in the background, to which I would dance, as if at a ball! The strings shared the qualities of the Cinderella theme, maybe that's why I loved it so.

I have searched the internet in vain for more info, and got very excited when the classic Radio 4 theme tune was put up on Youtube. So far though, I have not found the name of the show (i'm sure it was broadcast at 9am on Saturdays) however I only have to think of the tune and my childhood comes flooding back.

If you could ask around, it would mean a great deal to me to be able to share it with my own 5 year old!

Thank you,

Viv B."

In some cultures, silver is more valuable than gold.

I would struggle to name those cultures but let's just say that's correct.

We didn't bring home the bacon in the Best News and Current Affairs Programme, but the judges did say there was a "real sense of community among the programmes listeners." They also "wished to commend the reporting of Hugh Sykes - his attention to detail paints very clear pictures." Blog readers will know that not only does he paint very clear pictures on the radio, he's a dab hand with photographs.

Here for example is a blog posting from January:

As Hugh reported last night: "For many Yemenis, al Qaeda is the least of their problems. There is intense poverty, widespread malnutrition, unemployment, deep corruption, a violent conflict with separatists in the south, and a war against the Zaidi in the north who want recognition for their version of Shia Islam in this mostly Sunni country.
On top of all that, Yemen relies on oil for most of its income and there's only about five years of Yemeni oil left ...and....water is running out....the aquifers are also expected to run dry in five years. In one southern town there has been no tap water for two months. There've been water riots."

Here are Hugh's promised photos of Sana'a in the daylight, and a few words:

Here are Mohammed and Ahmed, aged 10 and 12, who were on PM talking about the donkey they look after:

And this another Ahmed, who roams the alleys selling boiled eggs. He told me he'd rather be in school:

It is heart-warming to be in a place where children simply run up to you and start chatting - or grinning from doorways:

And here are photos Carolyn sent yesterday of the media operation on College Green at Westminster.

"Troops from the Alabama National Guard are frantically building a wall around key parts of Dauphin island off the Alabama coast to keep the oil off the beaches. These structures are normally used in Iraq to make blast walls, but here they are filling them with sand and pouring a chemical on top which is designed to solidify when it comes into contact with oil.
