busier than I might have like to be this afternoon. But at least I know I'm valued.
Done lots of stuff for tomorrow's iPM...including a fascinating discussion with the title: "was Enoch right?" (hear the full interview tonight on the ipm blog...www.bbc.co.uk/ipm) and a chat with a prominent blogger in Pakistan...again there's much more on the iPM blog.
We WILL have another advent thingy this year then. If you have a photo you would like us to use, please email it to pm@bbc.co.uk...please put ADVENT in the subject line. Obviously if we get more than 24 or 25 we won't be able to use them all...please don't be cross if we don't use yours. Although as I recall we ran photos all the way through December last year. Look forward to receiving them...

I "don't do Christmas" with regard to presents, but I do join in the eating and drinking, and I ensure an ample supply of firewood and keep the open fire going continuously.

If Sequin can go a month without chocolate, I can go longer without "shopping"! It is interesting, though, to try and go even 24 hours without buying anything, if you include all habitual consumption (electricity, broadband, driving anywhere, etc., etc.)
It makes one hyper-aware of just how much unconscious consumption one does...

A national newspaper had a big thing this week about someone who had 'done no shopping' for a year. I got all excited, until I realised that what they meant was that she hadn't bought any new clothes in town centres during a twelve month period. Well, gosh, how exciting, and how difficult to manage. Not.
The worrying thing was that she had 'saved' six hundred and fifty pounds by the end of February, apparently, which means if that was a standard spending-rate she had been spending almost four thousand pounds a year on clothes she now discovered she didn't need at all. That's really sad.
We used to have a five pound family 'cap' on presents.
But now we've agreed to do 'home-made' presents for each other, and that seems to work well!!

In the 1960's my parents agreed with all their siblings not to give gifts to each other, but only to the children. This was more on economic grounds. Thus it came as a great surprise to my brother - and subsequently to me - at seeing how much other families give at Xmas and birthdays, when he met and settled with his partner. As a result, I may get given a lot more by brother's family, but much of it I never use.
Nonetheless, me too for the pic of Aperitif as Scrooge.
Was EM's valuation for insurance or replacement value? :-)

I love Christmas.
I love pressies however useless.
I love the food and the drink and the absolute quiet first thing.
I loved last Christmas when some of us froggers found time to share a bit of the day with each other in a virtual way.
And I remember poor Gossipmistress having to work.
Can't wait.

Ed (5), I like buying presents for people I like -- although that doesn't have to be at this particular time of year. I put a lot of thought into the gifts I buy for those I care about, but I guess there will be some things that I get wrong. Charity shops do very well out of me in January and it's always things from those I don't know so well and have this obligation-relationship with, rather than any real sharing spirit. Sharing spirit, now that's always good :-) Best bit of this season is of course the catching up with loved ones and spending quality time with good friends.
