    I heard on the PM news that Sir Ian Blair has been heavily critisised over the aftermath of the Metropolitan Police's shooting of Jean Charles De Menezes.

    Today I read in the Telegraph page 4 an article by Duncan Gardham on a report which claims that public libraries are stocking hundreds of Islamic books by advocates of "holy War" with many glorifying acts of terrorism. I think this is relevant because it was against this background 7/7, that the Menezes tragedy occured.

    Although many additives/E numbers are artificial, there are some natural ones out there - unfortunately nobody's had the bright idea of flagging them up (although I once saw a Safeway leaflet explaining E numbers that added a (N) to the end of natural/nature-identical additives).

    Colours:
    E100 - Curcumin - yellow/orange - aka turmeric root.
    E101 - Riboflavin - yellow/orange - aka Vitamin B2.
    E140 - Chlorophyll - green - it's what makes plants green!
    E141 - Copper complexes of chlorophylls - Derived from chlorophyll, no adverse effects known.
    E150 - Caramel - brown/black - heated sugar [1]
    E153 - Carbon black - black - usually burned vegetables, but burned meat, oils and fats also used.
    E160a - Carotenes - orange - yes, it's from carrots!
    E160b - Annatto - orange - from the seed coat of the fruit of the Annatto tree, often used to make red leicester cheese.
    E160c - Paprika extract - red - from the red pepper.
    E160d - Lycopene - red - it's what makes tomatos red! Not widely used yet, but may come from GM toms.
    E161b - Lutein - yellow - obtained from the same sources at the same time as E140 (chlorophyll)
    E162 - Beetrood red - red/purple - from beetroots, surprisingly enough.
    E163 - Anthocyanins - red/blue - found naturally in flowers, fruits and vegetables.

    The E170s are all derived from minerals.

    E170 - Calcium carbonate - white - chalk, limestone, marble, eggshells, stalactites, stalagmites etc.
    E171 - Titanium dioxide - white - derived from the mineral Ilmenite.
    E172 - Iron oxides - red/yellow/orange/brownblack - derived from iron ores.
    E173 - Aluminium - silvery-white - used for external decoration.
    E174 - Silver - silvery-white - used for external decoration.
    E175 - Gold - yellow - used for external decoration.

    
    But even natural ingredients have their horrors:
    E120 - Cochineal - red - the crushed carcass of a cactus-eating insect. Surprisingly enough not suitable for vegetarians, children or those with food allergies.

    The E200s (mainly preservatives) are a veritable minefield, but these three appear to be the only 'safe' ones (no known adverse effects):
    E202 - Potassium Sorbate
    E203 - Calcium Sorbate
    E234 - Nisin

    So please tell me why ukfoodguide.net claims it is "not recommended for consumption by children"?

    The people of Liverpool turned out in their thousands to pay tribute to this little boy, but maybe it is naive to hope that someone's conscience will be pricked by this outpouring of love & grief.

    Lets do some math

    550 soldiers divided by 5 per tent = 110 tents divided by 750 = 0.146 per tent. If I were in one of those tents, I would jump the fence and go AWOL. Too risky man

    Conclusion. The soldiers suffered a lot of shrapnel injuries. Time to hit the road jack!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Lets do some further math

    Incoming mortar 750 times a months which equates to 31days x 24hours = 744 hours divided by 750 = 0.992 rounded to 1 mortar per hour.

    Conclusion. The soldiers did not get much sleep so the "best army in the world" has basically run away. Fled
