    CLIMATE CHANGE AND LIBERAL PRIORITIES
    University of Reading, 25 May 2007, 9.30am-5.30pm
Can, and should, liberalism make itself hospitable to a politics which does justice
to climate change? To what extent are the values, methods and assumptions of
liberalism adaptable to the challenges raised?

Liberal thinking - broadly construed - may dominate the academy, and much of the
political landscape. Are environmental priorities a threat to it, or an opportunity
for it to show its worth?

This one-day conference explores these themes from a variety of different angles,
each putting in question fundamental aspects of the normative exploration of
environmental politics. It will be of interest to all those involved with tackling
these issues, and with the critical discussion of liberal thinking more generally.

But please don't talk to me about it.

    Aperitif,

It's liberal, not Liberal, and refers to 'liberal economics', which tends to disregard all 'externalities', like resource limitation and waste disposal.

This is the only way modern economics can show a profit. In true, all inclusive economics, "All profit is Nature's loss" -- Arne Naess

    Scooch hit global warming turbulence

Britsh pop band Scooch, whose song "Flying the Flag" was selected as the UK's Eurovision entry on Saturday have flown into a storm of protest after a conference of climate change experts sponsored by the Campaign for Climate Action (CaCA) passed a unanimous resolution condemning the group's promotion of air travel.

"These people are promoting air travel as a normal, even desirable activity", said Irma Greene, CaCA chair. "With the harm done to the global environment by aircraft emissions, you might as well enter a song in praise of nuclear war. This vote sends out a very negative and confused message at a time when the UK government is claiming to lead Europe on action against climate change".

CaCA now plans to protest to the European Broadcasting Union in an attempt to have the song banned from the competition. "The song's title 'Flying the Flag' bears strong similarities to British Airways advertising campaigns and clearly constitutes commercial endorsement." said Greene.
