I'm very fortunate in my job as a radio producer in having a presenter colleague who enjoys riding as much as I do so we can bore each other with endless horse talk. Dylan Winter, who presents Shared Earth on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio 4, as many of you may know, has done several long distance horseback rides in this country and the US - he rides Western style and I ride English. But while our riding style is different, Dylan and I agree wholeheartedly on one thing - being on a horse riding through the countryside is a great way to get up close to wildlife and really witness the beauty of the changing seasons in the landscape.

I'm discovering that woodlands are like a lucky dip, an intriguing outdoors bran tub to explore, revealing their treasure trove of botanical bounty across the seasons. For Shared Earth we've been visiting and recording in a listener's woodland that he purchased in Spring 2006. We're keen in the series to know how our listeners are getting involved with wildlife. Taking on a woodland is a big commitment involving a lot of time and effort, but beyond buying your own wood there's lots of ways to get involved with community woodland projects on your own doorstep.

Thought you might like the chance to hear some of the bird recordings that we made at the RSPB's Minsmere reserve in Suffolk for the Nature Spring Songbird Special. We were trying to record in early May when the birdsong was at its peak but we got hit by all that rain and the first three possible recording dates were a complete washout. We had only one chance left and had to go with whatever birds and weather were around that morning. I think it was May 18th. But thankfully we were incredibly lucky. When we got up at 3 a.m. the air was still, the rain had gone, and in the distance I could already hear a Nightingale singing.

A few days ago, news that cranes have been confirmed as breeding in East Anglia’s fens after a gap of over 400 years, caused us to change our plans. That’s why, following a 12 hour train journey from north-west Scotland, presenter Mike Scott has joined me at the RSPB’s Lakenheath Fen reserve on a warm and sunny morning. We met Norman Sills, the site manager, for a pre-recording coffee- and- conflab. Norman tells us that because of the recent media attention, the reserve has been extremely popular with visitors. The nesting birds are unapproachable, because they clearly can’t be disturbed or seen in their dense jungle of reeds, but another non-breeding pair has been feeding in meadows at the far end of the fen. However the sheer number of crane- worshippers has made even this pair skittish and unpredictable, so Norman says that we’re very unlikely to catch even a glimpse of a crane. In my head, programme plans re-shuffle, possibilities loom, evaporate and re-form; something’s bound to work out!
