I would like to pass on my best wishes to geoff.

I'm 24 and last year also got diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Geoff was a great player and it is sad to see him retire but whats important now is to get you fit and healthy again.

You can always look back and be very happy with what you've done in the past.

I have always admired Geoff Horsfield from a far, he has never played for my team but whenever I saw him play I wished he did!

I'm a Birmingham City fan and we've had some talented-ish players at our club in recent years. Cristophe Dugarry, Mauro Zarate and James McFadden to name a few. But my favourite player by far is Geoff Horsfield. His work rate and strength on the ball are both superb.

Its a real shame to hear of his illness and his loss to the game is significant. He's a real, honest Englishman, someone who 'the normal folk' can relate to.

Really, really liked Geoff as a player, and I often based the way I played on him. I remember first unveiling my 'Horsfield 9' West Brom shirt (despite being a Blackburn fan) at an 11-a-side game and scoring 6 goals. Guess I was inspired that day.

Geoff is a real professional, and I'm sure his objective won't be simply to beat this cancer: it'll be to absolutely destroy it. All the best of luck to him, though I doubt he needs it.

A legend in his own lifetime for Blues and Baggies fans alike, and not many players can say that; my missus is always asking 'when are Blues going to resign The Horse!'

It takes a special type of player to make it from non-league through to the Prem' and Geoff is one of those players. Who can forget the partnership of Christoph Dugarry and Geoff Horsfield!!!!

He had just been offered a contract by The Saddlers when he found out and retired from football. I was really pleased to see him just training with the Saddlers because his attitude was so respected by our players and management.
Having seen him play against us it would certainly have been beneficial to have him on our side for a change! :)

I was one of those "25 or 26 year olds" that Geoff played with at Athersley Recreation (not recreation!) in Barnsley all those years ago..We all knew where Geoff would end up as a footballer. Despite the "beer tokens!"

A legend, one of my favorite players (Im a BCFC fan). He is one of the main reasons I fell in love with The Blues. His style; old fashioned basics, strong spirit, no fancy dan. I would be happy to live in the championship forever if we could replicate his style.

A very nerdy footnote (Laugh on if you will) all the servers in my business are named after players and the first and most important is named after the man himself (As i read this I feel a bit of a saddo).

I am gutted to hear about this!!! Geoff is truly a legend and he helped me learn to love the shaymen. The only person who catapulted the club to fame even though we have had many greats at our club. Second to none in many areas!

I always hoped he would come back to us before he retired. I still pray he will change his mind once he has survived this horrid scare. A true legend and a shining example of the game!!

Although Bradford born and bred should mean you're one of the enemy, you are by far one of the most professional players in god knows how long, i'm 24 and can't think of many who have given so much and expected so little back.

Geoff was a fantastic player, underestimated by many, similar to a certain Emile Heskey, who gave 110% every game, and that certainly showed through his dedicated performances.

A guy who faces adversity face on, and a guy that will successfully beat a nasty illness, something all us blokes should be wary of (get checking guys!!!)

As a long standing Guiseley footy supporter I remember Geoff from his non-league days and since then have supported and watched his career grow from strength to strength. I feel proud that Guiseley could help produce a premiership player.

I now work in an office in the midlands with a West Brom fan, and so we can chat merrily of Geoff's achievements.

Seeing this page is the first I knew of Geoff's battle with cancer. Saddened as I am, I wish him all the best on his road to recovery which I'm sure he will make 100%. You're strength, determination and fighting spirit on the pitch will no doubt be used for this fight off the pitch.

geoff horsfield was the first player i ever saw score a goal, when halifax beat brentford 1 0 in 1998, so all my life he has had a major presence, he has also played for my first choice club leeds, so obviously i love him! hes always been a striker i have admired, although being 5 i really had no idea where he went until i heard he was in the premier league with birmingham many years later. It was great to know he was up there, and he fully deserved to be and i was so pleased when leeds signed him on loan.
He's just such a legend, and he'll always be remembered at town!

If Geoff is to be described as "legendary" then no place is such a description more fitting than at Halifax Town. In their championship season from the Conference, Geoff the Horse put the whole team on his back and rode them to the title.

Like another Shaymen fan contributor, I too had hoped that we might see Geoff back down the Shay to finish his career. Well perhaps the chances of that have just improved because, when, like Lance Armstrong, he beats this thing where better to start over?

I think that often the sign of the best and most respected players is when they score against your team but you can't begrudge them the goal as an individual. This more than applies to Horsefield who scored a very slightly important goal against Norwich in Cardiff......

Just found out about Geoff Horsefield - Hope all goes well for him as I think he's a model professional. Whilst mums and dads may want to think they have the next Ronaldo etc....Geoff is more of the player most parents should want their off spring to emulate. A grafter who has had to work and knows life as it really is ...none of this wage slave and celeb rubbish. One year ago my brother Peter, a Swedish Grimsby Town fan, got the same message. A fourtnight after he got married and 10 days after his 40th birthday..

He had to go through several treatments under almost one years time but is now well. In fact more than 90 percent gets well.

On Tuesday Peter and I will travel to London to watch Bristol City play Charlton.

I am the father of a testicular cancer sufferer so know what it is like to be connected to someone in Geoff Horsfield's position. My son is still with us, thankfully, after getting massive support from family and friends, whilst dealing with the illness with fortitude, dignity and bravery.

Having seen Geoff play his football bravely and in a positive manner, I have no doubt that he will tackle this latest challenge in the same positive way, and with the dignity that other cancer patients - the famous and the not so famous - face up to it. Just reading through the well-wishers on this site, Geoff should know he has the support of football fans, whatever their allegiance might be.

Good luck Geoff - I wish you all the very best. Think positively and if I may be so bold as to offer one last piece of advice, take a day at a time - it's a very good way to get through he treatment and, before long, you will be fit and healthy again.

Best of luck Geoff. I had a testicular cancer op in 1995 - and I am now fit as a fiddle (a pretty crochety and getting older fiddle, mind you). Every cancer is different, but I am sure you will come through.
One really good thing is the follow-up. It may be a nuisance having to go to hospital every week, then month, then year - but it sure feels good to know that the professionals are keeping an eye on you.

As a Spurs fan I would naturally be concerned about their current plight, HOWEVER, as a football supporter, this puts it all into perspective. I wish you well Geoff.

It wasn't the end of the world at all, i would like to re-assure you that the recovery rate is very high and i'd like to urge all readers to examine themselves once a month, it's well worth it. Better still, get your partner to check.

As a player in the local leagues, I played against Geoff when he played for Athersley Rec. A hard area of Barnsley, and he played hard. If he faces this like he faced us all those years ago, then he will beat this, no problem.

I was lucky enough to watch Geoff when he played at Guiseley before he was snapped up by Halifax Town. He was such a great player to watch as a kid and such an inspiration even in the unibond leagues. I always followed his career since wishing him the best of luck and hoping that city would one day sign him. Now i wish him the best of luck in this new battle. My thoughts are with him and his family.

geoff horsfield has played for two clubs i have followed; leeds utd, the club i have supported for nearly 50 years and scarborough fc whom i supported from 1991 until their demise, whilst have lived in the town.

geoff always seemed to be a good honest pro who gave 100%, which is rare enough these days.

that said, after reading the comments here, i feel i under-appreciated him i have NEVER come across a journeyman player who has engendered such genuine affection from the fans of the many clubs for which he played. it seems that no matter where he went the fans loved him for his commitment as much as his actual ability, although bearing in mind the level at which he played that is taken as read. shame some of the real big money boys don't show the same characteristics; i can't imagine cristiano ronaldo inspiring so many diverse supporters.

I hate Geoff, he did well against us every time he played, he played for teams i particularly dislike, he stuck elbows in defenders faces. I wish he'd played for Coventry and I hope his biggest battle is won. Our football needs more people who know about the grass roots and relate to the people who pay the wages. Good Luck the Horse.

Geoff, It is now 11 years since I had the same condition. I admired the way you always fought for the ball at the Blues. Just another fight Geoff, you can win this one too. I too had testicular cancer 17 years ago and it is true what the doctors say that it is completely treatable. I have never had any problems since my operation and treatment.

Best wishes to Geoff - he's been one of the most committed and determined players in the entire league over the past decade, whatever division he's been in (and I'm pretty sure he's been in all four).

The Peter Jackson anecdote was particularly apt... Jacko took a couple of months out last season for the successful treatment of throat cancer. He's already a hero to us Lincoln City fans, and as someone said above, with characters like Jackson and Horsfield, the cancer doesn't stand a chance.

You are proof that hard work and commitment can lead you from non league to the Premiership.
