Happy Blog Day!!

Post categories:

Mistajam | 15:29 UK time, Thursday, 31 August 2006

It's apparently international blog day. I got an email yesterday from Tee-Ess at 1Xtra online (I'm not giving his full name, he's already popular enough!) telling me all about it. The site was down with the proper instructions so I guess It's all about me linking to my favourite blogs on the internet in the hope that we spread the blog love and they'll link to me! You can always check my blogroll to the right of this post (just above the flickr fotos) but, in the spirit of the HipHop nerd god Pharrell, lemme tell you about my number one blogs in my mind (see what I did there?) Click "Continue reading Happy Blog Day!!" to see my current top 5 blogs.

Gonna do a bit of a news round up later - but right now, I'm off to prep for tonight's HipHop M1X Show. Check Radio Raheem 2 for more info...in the meanwhile, and realise how much I'm looking forward to 23rd September!!! BRING IT ON NIA!!!

Anyone got any blister plasters?

Because the Notting Hill Carnival was brilliant...but my feet are killing me!!

We didn't get down until 5pm but we'd missed nothing, the carnival was in full swing. Managed to get down to Rampage's street but couldn't get any closer than right at the back - the place was RAMMED! Having been to Notting Hill for the last 3 years, this years' carnival was by far the fullest I've seen for a while.

We (the future MrsJam and I) walked around the whole of the carnival, took in the food and the vibe and the food (did I mention the food?) for a few hours and finally dropped in to the secret location where 1Xtra had been broadcasting from all day for a quick chat. From the sounds of things (and the looks of the online gallery), the vibe in Leeds was just as good at Notting Hill.

At about 8, we attempted to go to Westbourne Park tube but were informed that it was closed so ended up walking a long ass way to Kensal Green tube station - the reason for the blisters on my feet!

Got to the afterparty too late to see Yummy Bingham (kinda peeved at that, but the pics are online) but G Child had the place bubbling. Rampage were up next and burned the place up with Tanya Stephens and Tracey K from Fish Go Deep performing. Tracey K was really good - I think most of the crowd were in shock that such a big voice came from such a small lady!!!

"Poor" Seani had lost his voice from living it up in Leeds (I have no sympathy - he got to travel back in the 1Xtra stretch hummer ffs!!) so Rodney P grabbed the mic for him while the live broadcast started. Not only did he have Cham bringing down the place with Rudeboy Pledge, Vitamin S and Ghetto Story but Tony Matterhorn had the girls dutty wining like there was no tomorrow.

As for how my set went...listen again and you tell me!

Big shouts to Ant & J9 for such a great party and Sirs P and W for allowing me to play!

MrsJam was on the camera so flickr pictures and youtube videos to follow, in the meanwhile check these, gaffled from the 1Xtra gallery (Blog ups to Big Dan H):

Seani demonstrates what 3 nights of solid partying can do to you!!

So as you lot flopped me and didn't give me any suggestions as to what I should start my set off with, I'm currently in the process of 'ripping' from vinyl all the clean edits I could potentially need for the Official 1Xtra After Carnival party tomorrow night. Usually, I'd be cool but as mine and Seani B's sets are going to be broadcast live on air, I have to make sure the songs I play are profanity free...

Spoke with Seani yesterday - he was still in the 1Xtra offices when I came in to do the Sat Nite Mixtape, getting ready to go to Leeds for this weekend's carnival shenanigans; and from a deejay's point of view, you don't want to follow Seani B - he can and could play anything and everything so that tight set you started to work out - forget it! Seani has the tracks (he's also a Slappa 600 deejay like me, check your favourite search engine if you don't know what I'm on about) and he's a world class deejay so he will probably play what you wanted to! Thank god I made the switch to CDs otherwise I'd have *NO* chance! I've seen deejays reduced to tears having to follow Seani, knowing that he's killed the crowd with every track the other deejay has in their vinyl box!!

Tomorrow nite is a big deal so my approach is be prepared. So, everything I currently have in my CD crate that isn't a radio edit, is currently being ripped from my vinyl collection and those tracks that are just too dusty to rip, are being searched for on my favourite legal download sites.

Wanna hear how I fare? Listen live on 1Xtra and Radio 1from Midnight on Monday...

Radio Raheem 2

Mistajam | 22:14 UK time, Saturday, 26 August 2006

Some people have asked me why do I call the posts where I reference what's been happening on my radio shows Radio Raheem. Well, Spike Lee's classic film (my second favourite film of all time behind Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd's "Trading Places" - yes, I'm an 80's baby!) has within it a character called Radio Raheem. I could explain why I've refrenced him, but watch the film and you'll understand. It's only cheap from the 'jungle store' (this is a ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ blog - I'm not giving the shop a proper mention!!)

ANYWAY...
This weekend, 1Xtra had a triple dose of MistaJam.

I have to apologise to all who have listened again to this week's HipHop M1X Show. As the show goes down during the small hours of thursday nite/friday morning, sometimes I get a little Gnarls Barkley (y'know, Crazy) and this week's show was no exception. I don't know whether it was the time or the pre-carnival energy or the vibe of Pharoahe Monch's 'Push' or the 5.35am delirium setting in but I, ahem, sang on air. If anyone wants a guest vocalist on their track, don't holla at me...

The Friday night show was a lot of fun - I got to drop some real Carnival classics from over the years and from the texts and emails we recieved, seems like y'all was feeling it too. Look below for the tracklistings - the tracklistings currently online are from last week's show. Listen again, wanna hear what you think of the show. Holla at me

While DJ Semtex was on the ones and twos for Dizzee Rascal at the Leeds Festival, I was in the hotseat for tonight's Saturday Night Mixtape. Really had fun on this one, the first mix was music chosen by me but then we opened it out to you to choose the tracks I span in the second mix. The response was RIDICULOUS!!! The studio was flooded with texts - too many to get into a 50 minute mix SO on next week's HipHop M1X Show, the hour long mix will be dedicated to fulfilling all those track requests I didn't get round to on the Sat Nite Mixtape. Ok? I've printed off all the texts and emails and will spend the week compiling all your requests - even those obscure ones...PWak in Liverpool, I'm talking to you sir!!!!!!

Right, I'm signing off - about to hit the M1 again, going home to Notts to prepare for Monday night's Official 1Xtra After Carnival Party.. more about that tomorrow.

Before I get 40 winks...

Mistajam | 10:48 UK time, Friday, 25 August 2006

Just got back to Nottingham after last nite's show - and it was a good one if I may say so myself!!

Congratulations to the winner of the M1X It Up competition - Doc JNR & Reality? I played their 15 minute mix again and spoke to them both live - they're a couple of jokers!! They, alongside BobaFatt win an hour long mix on the HipHop M1X show - so keep your eyes and ears peeled for more information. Wanna hear it? Click here to listen again.

I'll keep it short, wanna get to bed before its back on the M1 for tonight's show from 10pm til Midnite playing some HUGE club bangers but check the blog post below: I still need your help!! AND...the Persil Massive will run down the Kensal Massive. Don't know what I mean? Google it.

I'll check in later...and so to bed!

Exam results, Tonight's show and Carnival

Mistajam | 13:01 UK time, Thursday, 24 August 2006

GCSE results have just been released in England – special mention goes to my fiancée’s sister, Beth, who got 4 A*, 6 A’s & 2 B’s!! She did most of her revising either at her boyfriends or sunbathing so I reckon extra props are in order!!

If you didn’t get the results you wanted, or even if you did and still haven’t sorted out what you’re going to do next, don’t worry…! I dropped out of my A-Level’s to take my role in Crossroads and I know I can always go back – so can you. There’s plenty of time to figure out what you want to do with your life, so don’t worry.

If you’re looking for some professional support, 1Xtra’s sister station Radio One have set this up. Holla at them…

On the M1X Show tonight, we’re announcing the winner of the M1X It Up competition. Is it Doc Jnr & Reality? or DJ Eternity? I’ve got the usual across the board back to back banging Hip Hop and the hour long mix is gonna take a Carnival twist…

Catch it tonight, 2-6am on 1Xtra or listen again here!

Check 1Xtra’s carnival minisite

Speaking of Carnival, I’m playing at the Official 1Xtra Notting Hill Carnival afterparty this Monday night. Tickets are gone and it’s a secret location invite only type steelo so if you want to hear what’s going down, you need to listen to either 1Xtra or Radio 1 from midnight and check the carnival minisite.

This will be my first official Carnival afterparty that I’m deejaying at and only the 4th time I’ve worked at Carnival. First time was in ’97 on Westwood’s stage the same year as Jay-Z, Lil Kim & Junior MAFIA; second time was on a rival station’s stage (boo!!) alongside Red Rat; third time was last year with 1Xtra helping out on the outside broadcast and then we have this year!

Question is, what should I start my set off with? I’m following Seani B who I’m sure will be tearing through some bashment like there’s no tomorrow but should I start Hip Hop? R&B? UKG?

Lady Sov taking over the USA?

Post categories:

Mistajam | 13:56 UK time, Tuesday, 22 August 2006

Seems like everyone's favourite female UK emcee (yeah right) Lady Sovereign is taking over American online media. , , Seems like American media's really lapping the whole gimmick up.

She's got her first single on Def Jam coming called "Love Me Or Hate Me" - the beat's bad but her verses are...erm...trash.

I can't stand her and REALLY don't rate her. Jigga obviously saw pound signs when he signed her - she's small, she's the "british Female Eminem" but what do y'all think Jigga was thinking when he signed her? Was it purely because of the gimmick? Why didn't he sign another artist? It's not like there is a lack of good ones over here...

The next big UK rapper?

Mistajam | 13:48 UK time, Monday, 21 August 2006

So Robbie Williams has made this "HipHop" track "Rudebox" from his forthcoming album of the same name. Now, on one hand, it's good that Sly and Robbie are gonna get some more £££ for his use of their classic track ...but is Robbie genuinely being serious here? Apparently he's worked with Mark Ronson on his new album so is he trying to make HipHop?

He's always claimed to be a HipHop fan - citing Wu Tang and Dr Dre as a couple of his favourite artists of all time; but this feels very uncomfortable, very, erm, ...

I really don't like it but what do you think?

Reckon Robbie can do something to surprise us all or is he just aping our culture because he's run out of other ideas?

..and is he shouting out our Semtex??? Have the mixtapes inspired him to do this?????????

Only got a few minutes before I hit the road to Newquay for a gig tonight (the club's called Baracuda for whoever wants to come check it out - It's me, Skinnyman, PLC and Word Association...should be HEAVY!) - as I haven't done so yet, lets talk radio shows!

The US on the UK Grime Scene

Mistajam | 16:58 UK time, Friday, 18 August 2006

So, BET sent their cameras to the UK to cover the grime and UK HipHop music scene and above is what they came up with.

They feature Kano, Sway, Jammer, Lethal B and more...in fact some of the Kano bits were filmed at UK Takeover (and it's refrenced as something positive within the scene)

What do you think? Did they do us justice? Is this good for the US to see?

Started this on the messageboards at 1Xtra, but lets move it to the blog...

Good news for HipHop?
