Why "Tory" is Scottish football's buzzword
If you walked past a number of football dressing rooms this week, you would be forgiven for thinking that politics had become the hot topic of discussion amongst the players, with "Tory" being the buzzword!
However, can rest easy as it was not the Conservative Party policies being debated but rather in Glasgow's southside.
As the , many teams have descended upon this fantastic facility and been able to train almost as normal.
I say almost, because although we have managed to complete sessions which have varied little from those that would have taken place at our training base, namely those consisting of passing drills, possession and small-sided games, there have been other drills which have been difficult to complete.
In order to see this content you need to have both Javascript enabled and Flash installed. Visit µþµþ°äÌý°Â±ð²ú·É¾±²õ±ð for full instructions
For example, we have been unable to work on any tactical shape or formations mainly due to the fact that other teams waiting to use the facility can watch our training session.
We have also seen Motherwell and Kilmarnock training in recent weeks, and it has certainly thrown up a unique situation for players and management in that they have been able to observe Scottish Premier League rivals in their daily routines.
While this is certainly a downside to the demand for the Toryglen facility, there are so many positives from such an arena that it only makes players ponder why it has not been replicated all around our country.
Finance is the most obvious stumbling block, but joint projects between government, clubs and businesses could surely be achieved and similar venues, not necessarily as luxurious as Toryglen, could be created.
Such indoor training facilities could only offer our elite players the best opportunity to reach the levels we all desire, and encourage and increase participation in football, especially from children.
With a productive training week behind us, we were able to record our second win of the new year against .
We expected a difficult match, and Alloa certainly did not disappoint in that respect, giving a performance that suggests they will be serious contenders for promotion from the Second Division.
Alloa are, of course, a part-time team and, having spent my first season at Clyde as a part-time player, I can appreciate the sacrifices these players make and the demands placed upon them as they combine full-time employment with playing senior football.
A number of SPL clubs have taken to loaning players to these clubs, and I believe that it is a great experience for a young player who is brave enough to accept such a move.
It not only provides them with the opportunity to play in competitive fixtures with points and bonuses at stake, but opens their eyes to how fortunate they are to be at a full-time club, and should increase their desire and ambition to enjoy a long and successful professional career.
There are a number of success stories which can support this school of thought, such as , who spent time at Stenhousemuir while a young player at Hibs, and , a former team-mate, who was loaned to Forfar before returning to Falkirk.
Both of these players, especially the former, have achieved so much since their part-time experiences and with the ridiculous decision to scrap the reserve league, it could be that this career diversion will continue to lead players on the road to success.

Play amateur football but have been lucky enough to play at Toryglen on a number of occasions and it's certainly a first class facility and agree that it would be very beneficial if this kind of centre was replicated around the country. Also liked the comment on the reserve league being scrapped, can you tell me what the players not getting a game in the first team and younger players coming through from 19's do for match sharpness with a competitive edge? and how are you and the guys enjoying the new Saints training centre at Ralston and what benefits do you feel this will bring to the team?

With regards to the reserve league(or lack of it), players rely on bounce games being organised between clubs, which are undoubtedly less competitive than reserve games were-and as far as I am aware St Mirren were in favour of retaining the reserve set up as it was.
Finally, it is a very crowded fixture list that we face over the next six weeks but players always prefer games to come around quickly, and if you can go on a winning run within this period then it can have a huge impact upon what you are playing for at the end of the season. (so hopefully our current form will continue!)
