The role of the media

Where would we be today without the quick fire reports supplied by the media on millions of different subjects.

Television provides vivid pictures of war torn countries, and the devastation caused by man鈥檚 inhumanity to man.

We are subjected to hundreds of reality shows, which seem to be on our screens day and night.

Advertising keeps the media going. In fact, a half hour programme such as is reduced to 27 minutes. Ok, this is something we have to live with.

What I can鈥檛 understand is, why oh why do we have to put up with so many repeats?

How can this be justified?

So, now, I have to think of the good points.

The media opens all sorts of doors for many different reasons.

The good news although there doesn鈥檛 seem to be a lot of it around these days, is brought to us just as speedily.

Technically, I believe, the media has made the world a heck of a lot smaller.

Sport, Leisure, Shopping, and broadcasts in Education are ours to listen to or view by flicking a switch.

The problems of the universe are beamed into our living rooms, and no matter how far away, we immediately become a part of other people鈥檚 misery, or a joyous occasion is celebrated, and we can be there in spirit, because we can share the sights and sound through the technological genius that is the media.

Strangely enough I think you have hit on a great reason to only LISTEN to the news on the radio and not watch it on TV.

One of the major problems of beaming horrific pics into our living rooms is that eventually we become immune to them or turn off the TV or switch channels - it would be interesting to do some research on how many people switch channels at those horror spots in TV.

The journalists I believe are going for not necessarily sensationalism but more realism perhaps, but the result is the same as mentioned above.

Yes I think they will eventually do themselves out of a job as less and less people choose to watch the gory details. Radio may make an even greater comeback!

I rarely watch TV for several reasons. One of these is because I wasn't able to abide watching and hearing something tragic on the news, and then it being followed by a trailor for some racy drama. I found(find) this so terribly uncaring and cruel.
I often wonder how those who read a tabloid, such as the Sun, can possibly take anything seriously when on the one hand there is a sensational heart-rendering story on the front page, and then a tacky half-nude on the next page!!

Television has the power to dull the senses, and captivate the willing audience.

Today I have watched no TV nor listened to the radio(missed the Prom though because of it!).

    Hello Margo

I think the reason for repeats on TV and reality shows comes from the fact there isn't enough material to sustain 12 hours broadcasting never mind 24 hours.

We have 'more' these days instead of 'better'.

A lot of research on tv indicates it is very bad for folk BUT like many inventions, it is here now and makes a nice profit, so will be around for a long time, probably longer than ciggies.

Margo I just wanted to say that I thought the film Beautiful People was wonderful. Is it possible to put the link on here so we can get to see it again?
