Daphne from Dover asks: Can I grow my courgettes in grow bags or pots and how big do the pots have to be?
Answer: Yes you can, but they are heavy feeders so you will need to make sure you give them regular feeding and watering. The larger the pot the better.
Maxine from Dinnington in Sheffield asks: My courgettes have been growing well and the bigger ones have now been moved to their permanent homes and doing fine. The medium-sized ones are wilting, even though they are not pot-bound and are watered well etc. I was wondering if the recent cold nights have affected them and will they pick up again.
Answer:The cold nights might have had an effect - do you know what temperature it got down to? They don't like it less than 5 degrees C. Were they sufficiently hardened off before you put them out (sometimes younger plants are more susceptible).
Are the whole plants wilting or just the older leaves - the crucial bit is the growing point, if that still looks pert then you may be ok, if the stem has collapsed as well then all may be lost. I would suggest trying some direct sowing. At this time of year they can be very quick and sometime catch up the planted out ones (though you have to be careful of slugs).
