Early ears on this morning...

Chris Evans | 08:00 UK time, Thursday, 5 November 2009

...that is, my turn for the Noah shift.

What this means, is that from approximately four o'clock this morning I have been hyper alert to every creak, whimper and breath that may or may not have been real/imagined up until baby DJ's bottle time just after six.

These early ears only operate when I'm on Noah duty, when it's Tash's turn to take care of the little man, I am remain asleep and it's highly unlikely that even a small explosion would cause me to so much as stir.

What a fascinating creation we human beings are.

Naoh says, "yum yum gurgle gurgel burp," by the way.

    Yikes whats happening ??

  • Comment number 7.

Mornin' all from a lovely sunny Dublin, hurrah!

Finally made it, bedraggled an' filthy tempered, after battlin' through fire, flood an' brimstone from practically on me own doorstep to HMS Hotpoint yesterday, hope it's cleared up back at t' ranch.

Big Brrrrrp hic back lo ickle Noah. XXX tickle pinchy cheek.

Ah yes, see, that's the thing. Along with the automatic omnipotence that is bestowed upon ALL us mummies at the point of the cuttin' of the umbilical cord, comes the ability to sleep through thunder, lightning and next-door's all-nighters. I can sleep on a washin' line in the middle of the rugby pitch durin' a hurricane if I need to. But the slightest burp or whimper from the ickle baby and I'm snap awake.

Mind you it's not funny wakin' up with a burpin', gibberin' an' titterin' baby daughter when she's nearly 30 is it.

And another thing.. am not aware that I ever felt like this before I was a mummy myself, but when I hear a genuine distress cry from a baby it sends me into distress myself, I HATE it. Not a roarin' tantrum, like; you know what I mean. When you see someone ignoring what is obviously not just fractiousness but real distress; it really disturbs me.

In fact. I remember posting that I saw the film Hangover and HATED it. And that was not just because I found it puerile, but largely because of the baby that featured in the said fillum, with the characters roarin' an' screamin' over its head, the child was in genuine discomfort and so was I. Never mind the film-makers, what are parents thinking of to allow their child to be used like that in films, soaps, etc. I certainly couldn't.

So there. As I say, I know EVERYthing. Hmph.

Ok, off to do battle with the Dublin traffic.

    Mind yourselves,

Problems for me too this morning - working now though so all is well (apart from the result last night of course, but that's for another blog!).
Getting to quite like this working at home malarky, I can peruse the blog comments at my lesiure without having to worry about someone looking over my shoulder to see what I'm doing. Obviously the downside is that you don't really have much to comment on...although I can confirm that the house behind us ALREADY have their Christmas decorations up (sticking to the tradition of putting them up the last week in October....).

Anyway, ARF - how about Caption Beaky by Keith Michell? No particular reason....

Ali, Have a wonderful trip. You don't know how jealous I am, not just of your trip but all that alone time on the plane with nothing to do but read and snooze and people watch. Looking forward to meeting you when you get back. Travel safely

Marian Keyes, yes, love her. Didn't realise how much until I saw her on Paul O'G. Are we sure she's not really Clodagh using a nom de plume??

Right off to look busy, might not be back til later, will get logged out by The System and not sure if I can fool the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖiD guards again!!

JG: Thanks for the weather forecast for Liverpool - I have to confess, I was avoiding checking it out. Still, it will be terrific, and it will be warm and dry inside the pub! However, it will be a bit of a challenge walking round Penny Lane in the pouring rain (see what I did there?!)

Uncle Carl: I absolutely love Captain Beaky! That was in the charts when I was living in America, and my friend sent me the single. I was really homesick and that record was SO "British" it just cheered me up!

Well, I have just been invited to a corporate dinner dance tomorrow night, in Liverpool !!!!! Which does throw a few dilemmas for me.

Dress - need a dinner dance one , have one at home but may not be able to get into it . Do i go home and try it on, wasting valuable shopping time , or do i just hit the shops after work and keep the receipt? - nothing like short notice hey .

Saturday morning, do i sober up , and go home , get washed and neurofenned up, before heading back out to Liverpool. Or do i just go and sit in the Albert Dock, with me hangover and party frock on ?

    Arternoon all
Juts wanted to pass on to you lovely lot the humbling experience I have just had. Coming home from my parents house I go thru a sleepy Wiltshire town which is featured a fair bit on the news these days. Hit the back of a queue of cars and then realised what today is. I have just had the unexpected opportunity to participate on the repatriation parade for one of our fallen 'boys' in Afghanistan, never witnessed it before, seen the crowds gathered before hand but managed to get thru the town before the event but am so glad I was there today. All drivers exitted their cars, most wearing poppies, and bowed heads as Olaf's Union Jack draped coffin passed us in the hearse on the way to Brize Norton. No impatience, no revving engines etc, just people happy to be able to pay there respects.
For this reason, could my ARF choice be We All Stand Together as that is exactly what Wootton Bassett does on all these sad occasions
Sorry to go on so long and thanks for listening

MC - definately a new dress.. has to be done! have a fab time! (and hope the hosp has sorted the debacle that is MiL`s op too!)

Now, kids..having none of my own but having looked after nephew since being very tiny (he was tiny..not me).. i know the `sleep with one ear open thing`..bizarre instinct eh..but clever really!

And books..Beez etc asking for suggestions... for you ladies who like Marian Keyes (and who doesnt?!) then have you tried Dorothy Koomson (sp?!).. fave is Mt Best Friends Girl but all are fab..and funny and sad..try her!

For Thriller typy stuff... Mark Billingham is my fave..have recurring character called DI Tom Thorne but can be read out of order too... fave is Sleepyhead..i defy anyone to spot the twist!

Also good are Peter James (particularly Dead Again) and also anything by Faye Kellerman or Johnathon Kellerman..husband and wife team who both write.

Lastly if anyone has not read any Ben Elton i suggest `Blast from the Past` to start with...followed by `Chart Throb`..a brilliant take on X Factor etc! He really writes well.

If anyone wants anymore suggestions then yell... my 3 full bookcases will yield more i`m sure!

Now..anyone looking forward to this weekend...?!

I was just losing the will to live here in my orange box/cell, then I looked at the clock and thought to myself, hmmm, this time tomorrow i'll have broken the back of my journey norf and be an hour away from Liverpool.

Then I googled a 5 day forecast for the aforementioned city - it's changed from Biblical rain to light showers on Saturday and sunshine on Sunday.

Then I remembered it's The Restaurant on the tellybox tonight!

Maybe life's not so bad afterall.

    Hi All

Tiggs, what a privilige to be part of that tribute. We shall be "on parade" on Sunday. The boys' Scout troop take part in the town rememberance parade which is in the afternoon and have asked to go to the church parade in the morning. A small thing but we can do it so we will.

This blog today (and the diversion to Marian Keyes site) have given me so many suggestions for new books and authors, thanks everyone

    Hi all,

Not at all caught up on all the posts today but wanted to wish those travelling up to Liverpool tomorrow a safe journey and can't wait to meet you all in the flesh on Saturday.

Hope everyone OK, it's dark and wintry here (an hour away from Liverpool) so thermals and waterproofs at the ready!

    Sounds good Deevs.

Just out of interest (& in anticipation of another chance) how long will it take to get there, where will you go from & via & is it very expensive?

Feel like a bad mum now, at 2.30 this morning woke with 7 year old crying down my ear he'd been calling me for an hour and I hadn't heard a thing, this is the first time ever that has happened - what a guilt trip I am on today. Spent half an hour with him soothing growing pains in his leg, poor wee soul. Eventually, and with the aid of painkillers he went back to sleep until 7.30 this morning.

Hope my open ear doesn't let me down again, was shattered last night and must have been in a really deep sleep.

Chris what a wonderful Dad you are. In my day when my babies were babies it was the womans job, well that's what i used to get told anyway! And I was a baby boomer as well when we were all liberated in the 60's. Didn't happen in my house though exH hardly knew where the fridge was!

Have a lovely time in FAB 4 country you lot in case I do not get back on here.

Leaving Coooooooooooooooolchester on the 13.03, into Liverpool Street, taxi to Euston (I don't do the underground on my own, esp with a case), then from Euston to Lime Street Liddypool, arriving at 5.15.

Ticket prices - my outbound was an apex and cost £11. My return is an open one, valid for a month after arrival (now there's a thought ...) and all in the rail tickets (inc underground gate pass) came to £82.

And then there's the million pound coins I've been saving for the very hungry car park machine at the station. I love the fact that my ticket from Col-Liverpool was £11 but it's gonna cost me £15 to park the car til Monday night!

Daisy: Hope you have a good trip too, on Saturday. Mary and Annie are really looking forward to meeting you, and of course, I can't wait to see you again!

Re: being a bad mum: take a number! I remember when MsS was just a tootsie and wasn't well one night,I slept through the entire episode! Normally, I would have been out of bed like a shot, but I slept the sleep of Kings, while she cried and fretted .... until in the distance, I heard her cries. I felt like a criminal for a week, so I know your pain!

Cheryl: thanks for the update on the weather for the weekend. Shall I take my wellies out of my case?!

    Hi all

Left work at 4 to get home to let Finlay out before the fireworks, but the plan almost backfired, as I got stuck in traffic, didn't get home until 5.25!

Luckily not too many going off here yet!

It's not that stoopid dog is afraid of them, it's that once they start he runs around the garden barking at them and won't come in until they stop. Given the weather, the garden is muddy enough, without him charging around like a lunatic all night!

Anyway, hope all the travellers tomorrow have a good trip, especially those driving, it's gonna be wet again, so be careful! Hope all the trains run to plan as well, leaves on the line and all that!

    Hi Seza and Bingo!

Doggie is mad for going out, I'm having a nightmare! He's not allowed in the lounge, cos the fish are there and might jump up at the tank, so he's stuck in the kitchen and dining room, and trying to get out the back door!

Fish are fine, doing well, and not interested in fireworks thankfully!

How's you, saw about the church/scout thing...used be a guide and was always proud to do it, even if most years we froze!!
