A theme

Bryan Burnett | 20:15 UK time, Monday, 5 July 2010

bb2.jpgAdultery or alcohol?, Annual events or Aberdonians? Actors or allegations? You can see how hard it's been trying to pick a theme to kick off our A-Z of themes. In the end we went for Kenny in Alexandria's clever suggestion of 'after eight'. That means we're looking for tracks about the night or the wee small hours of the morning. Leave your suggestions on the blog below and let's start thinking of a B for Tuesday!

He should have stuck with 'Angling in Adverse Conditions'

113° is a wee bitty warm.

For B a good one would be 'Burnt to a Crisp'

    TUESDAY

I Drove All Night - Roy Orbison

Night Driver - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

We've Got Tonight - Bob Seger

After Hours - We Are Scientists

    Harvest Moon - Runrig

Up All Night (Frankie Miller Goes to Hollywood) - Counting Crows

(for producers of a nervous disposition, this song doesn't feature Frankie Miller, it doesn't even mention Frankie Miller. You will not be contravening the FM rules in any way.)

    copied and pasted:

and if by any chance you should happen to play one of my suggestions, I'd be most grateful if you could mention the Proudfoot family.

    Ella Fitzgerald Time After Time
Getting a notion to go for an opera option. a long way off - but - Dido's Lament. No, not the one about not being able to hit the same high notes your brother can.
    Purcell. Dido's Lament. Alison Moyet.

    After sixty - nine:

    Midnight Rider - Paul Davidson

there are lots of versions of The Allman Bros classic but this reggae version is truly delightful. As good a cover version as 'Helpless' by K D Lang was tonight. The guitar playing on this is worthy of Duane Allman, and that's quite a tribute. Please play it, it'll cheer everyone up, those with Spoify can check it out

Devon Sproule - 'A Plea For A Good Night's Rest'. Great lyrics, lovely song.

    After Eight:

Del Amitri - This Side Of The Morning

    Steven Lindsay - Midnight

    Springsteen - Drive All Night

Patsy Cline - Walkin' After Midnight (or the excellent Cowboy Junkies version)

Ian Hunter - Ships (for the lyric sabout Ships that pass in the night. One of Hunters best tracks, strangely covered by Bazza Manilow. From the You're Never Alone With A Schizophrenic lp which is probably the best Hunter solo lp,recorded with the majority of the E Street Band and of course Mick Ronson).

Cherry Ghost - 4AM, from the excellent debut album and I think the follow up due any day now which sounds brilliant. This would be good.

Paul Simon - Late In The Evening

  • Comment number 20.

calling Norrie both a tube and a balloon's a bit harsh, Julie. ;0)

Looking forward to checking out lots of these great suggestions - esp Paul Davidson-Midnight Rider, Warren Zevon & TP

  • Comment number 21.

    Wednesday - Bikes

Could be push bikes or motor bikes. My choices would be The Acoustic Motorbike by Luka Bloom or 1952 Vincent Black lightning by Richard Thompson.

    But plenty other options:
Nine Million Bicycles - Katie Melua
Motor Cycle Go-Go-Go - The 5.6.7.8s (Japanese rock!)
Always Like This - Bombay Bicycle Club
    My White Bicycle - Nazareth
Daisy (Bicycle Made for Two) - John Fahey has a nice instrumental version
    Harley Davidson - Brigitte Bardot
Ballad of Easy Rider - Byrds
Born to be Wild - Steppenwolf
    Tour de France - Kraftwerk
    Bike - Pink Floyd
    Motorbike Beat - The Revillos

.... and of course the Push Bike Song by the Mixtures

You might also accept anything by Steve Harley.

    Tuesday After Eights

I have a whole playlist entitled Late, Drunk & Blue which would suit this theme. But it's at home right now :-(

    * Marillion - At That Time of the Night (The Short Straw)
    * Patsy Cline - Walkin' After Midnight

And of course, something from Tom Waits is essential in the wee sma' hours. I'm going for The Piano Has Been Drinking.

Very tempted by Round Midnight, but it might trigger a demarcation dispute with Stephen Duffy.

#12 - LOL That's so funny! Poor Norrie! I hope he feels better soon!

For Tuesday - I'll Meet You At Midnight - Smokie

    - Warren Zevon - A bit of funk 25 years and an ocean of vodka away from his swansong in #17

  • Comment number 36.

    - Warren Zevon - This Lynyrd Skynrd tribute would also fit the theme

  • Comment number 37.

    WEDNESDAY:

    BEER + SKITTLES

    Pub Rock.

An often overlooked genre, without which there may have been no punk rock..Dr Feelgood, Graham Parker, Eddie + The Hot Rods...bands you've seen play in a pub or maybe even had a drink with!

  • Comment number 38.

    After Eight:

Guillemots - Trains to Brazil (the first line is "It's one o'clock on a Friday morning")
Arctic Monkeys - When the sun goes down

And I know they've already been suggested, but I would also like to hear
The Eagles - One of these nights and
We Are Scientists - After Hours

    Tuesday

additions: I'll add to those who have suggested

Night Comes On - Leonard Cohen

wonderful lyric, Laughing Lenny at his story telling best and a very different type of night story, part ghost, part surreal, part psychological insight.Love it. It would be tremendous to hear this. The doubters in the audience would have to revise their opinion

Night Ride ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ - Joni Mitchell

Considering much of her material is 'deep and insightful' about the human condition and human attraction and consequently, a bit serious - it is an irony that no one captures simple deep joy quite like Joni. This is just so exuberently happy, it's irresistable, a warm July 4th evening, crickets in the background, big blue Moon. Lovely. Happy. Let's cheer everyone up!

    Every Night - Paul McCartney

    effortless genius

Les Nuits - Nightmares On Wax

    Epic!Beautiful!

The Night - Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons

doesn't immediately seem like a Motown classic, but great bass line and magnificant timing. Love it.

The Night We Nearly Got Busted - Alabama 3

perhaps this is beyond the pale?

    Good Night - The Beatles

Lullaby delivered by Ringo, good show closer

That'll do, big 2nd for 'Midnight At The Oasis' Maria Muldaur - I never tire of it.

it would be good to hear any of these or my earlier suggestions.

    Tuesday

    Silent Night - Bing Crosby

Although slightly unseasonal, this classic from 1952 encapsulates night like no other song. Bing's mellifluous baritone lifts this pedestrian Germanic Weihnachtslied to a level few other crooners could achieve. Listening to this it is hard to believe he was a wife-beater.

Clearly the work of a clever tribute band. No beer or cigarettes in sight.

    Thursday - Canadian Artists

Plenty to choose from (Martha and the Muffins; Avril Lavigne; Jane Sibery: Nelly Furtado; Neil Young; Alanis Morisette; Gordon Lightfoot; Men Without Hats; Barenaked Ladies; Cowboy Junkies; Blood Sweat and Tears; Arcade Fire; Feist; Prairie Oyster; Joni Mitchell; The Band; Johnny Kid and the Pirates; Crash Test Dummies; kd lang; Paul Anka; Bedouin Sounclash; Shania Twain; Leonard Cohen ..... but not Nickleback, Celine Dion or Michael Buble for me, thanks).

Or you could do 'Canadian or American?' - playing one track by a Canadian artist followed by one from an artist from the USA (plenty more choice there!)
