Just back from watching 'Backbeat' at the Citizens Theatre - a play about the relationship between John & Stu & Astrid. The girl who plays Atrid is uncannily like the real Astrid.

Great music: John always said the early Beatles were like a punk band and you get some sense of what Hamburg must have been like - this production is relatively economic but cleverly done, but that notwithstanding, I believe I've just seen the next Mama Mia.

It's on until March then will go massive in London, no doubt.

You heard about it on this blog first! Go and see it, then you can say 'I was there at the opening run'.

It contains a couple of obvious historical inaccuracies: I've never heard it suggested before that Stuart Sutcliffe named the band - 'the Beatles' is a classic piece of Lennon illiteration.

In Giles Havergal's day they would have played up the gay angle - it's in the title after all.

The gay aspect is only hinted at really. It was nice to see a production which didn't paint Macca as an unreasonable egomaniac control freak.Matter of fact, for anyone who is unfamiliar with the story, they will probably be surprised to discover what an objectionable thug John was, but like the gay aspect, if anything, that's underplayed.

I bought that Muse album cause JFE recommended 'Uprising'on this blog.

So far I've found it quite hard going.But then, I don't 'get' Radiohead either. I think I must have listened to too much Yes,King Crimson,BJH,Genesis etc etc in my yoof to be bothered with working at it now.I was so much older then....

On the subject of resenting bands that are self important and 'serious', I've always found REM especially nauseating. And however sympathetic to the cause, charitable disaster response singles have always sounded completely naff to me.

Therefore, the chances of me liking 'Everybody Hurts' for Helping Haiti were always going to be remote: But I absolutely love it. I even downloaded it.

So for Tuesday:
