Next Week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 07:28 UK time, Friday, 21 August 2009

We've just had one of the busiest weeks on the show we've had in ages. I suspect the horrible weather has meant a lot more people have been at home listening to the radio rather than out in the fresh air. At times this week I've felt overwhelmed with the amount of requests coming in so I apologise if I didn't get round to mentioning your suggestion.
Try again this week as I think we've got some good themes lined up. As usual you can leave your comments here on the blog, contribute to our Facebook page, email or just phone or text during the show.

Paul_Anka.jpg
Monday 24th
It's all we've talked about in the last couple of weeks so we had to do 'weather' as a theme. From the autumn wind to sunny afternoons and songs just right for the Scottish summertime. With your suggestions of weather song the forecast for tonight's Get It On is looking good.

Tuesday 25th
Tonight's Get It On has real specs appeal. From the Proclaimers to Roy Orbison it's the pop stars with glasses that we'll play tonight. The performers who put the specs center stage on tonight's show...

Wednesday 26th
Tonight it's all about the avenues and the alleyways! On this day in 1981 Ottawa City Council named a street Paul Anka Drive in his honour. So it's the streets of pop. Take the road to hell and end up in heartache avenue on tonight's Get It On....

Thursday 27th
Ask for anything you like on tonight's show. The only stipulation is that you must have a reason to dedicate to someone. Tell me what you want and why. 'Song for whoever' is the theme...

After the week we've had I think the best approach is the one as follows...

Laughter in the Rain - Neil Sedaka

    Other weather related stuff...

Four Strong Winds - Neil Young
    Snowbird - Anne Murray

  • Comment number 2.

Themes I thik can be split into two types. Ones you have to think about and ones that generate huge lists that can be difficult to narrow down. I'm afraid the weather falls into the latter category.

    Monday
Love is Blue (I Can Sing a Rainbow) / The Dells
    Great bit of kiddies soul

Against the Wind / Bob Seger
Love the piano solo in this

Against the Wind / Maire Brennan
Just backing up Scotch in this oft requested tune. Long overdue a
    play on GIO.

Dust in the Wind / Kansas
Great song from an underrated band

Wild is the Wind / David Bowie
One of his best. Reminds me of a wild night in more ways than one.

Rainy Night In Georgia / Brook Benton
Fav version of the Tony Joe White Song

    Hurricane / The Singing Hoover
    Best Dylan Song by far

Sunshine of your Smile / Mike berry
    Guilty Pleasure

    Sunshine Day / Osibisa
    Real feel good 70's number

Save it for a rainy day / Stephen Bishop
    Another underrated singer

    Birdland / Weather report
    Classic Jazz

NYC Weather Report / Five for Fighting
This guys got a great voice. Should hear more of him.

And finally, not sure if I've asked for this before
Thunder Road Live Hammersmith 75 / Bruce Springsteen

  • Comment number 3.

I'm probably (nah, who are we kidding) going to come back with more, but strong contenders for next week have to be:

    Monday Weather:
Billy Bragg - St Swithin's Day
A beautifully bittersweet love song (as so many of Billy's are), linked into all the rain & Shakespeare associations with the Saint's Day.

    Tuesday Specs:
Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star
(although you could have any of the FGTH tracks, given Trevor Horn's involvement)

    Wednesday Streets:
The Beatles - Why Don't We Do It In The Road

  • Comment number 4.

    Monday:

Here comes the sun - Beatles
    It's raining again - Supertramp
Fog on the Tyne - Lindisfarne (my third use of this song in as many weeks)

    More to follow

    DC in Cellardyke

  • Comment number 5.

    Monday weather again:

According to wikipedia, "The Jethro Tull album Stormwatch features the shipping forecast in between verses of North Sea Oil. It is read by Francis Wilson, a TV weatherman who also reads the introduction to Dun Ringill on the same album."

Seems like the right time to play some Tull?

    Other possibilities:

Rainy Night in Georgia - Brook Benton
    Hurricane - Bob Dylan
Full Force Gale - George Ivan Morrison (Van tae his pals)
Misty - Ella Fitzgerald (amongst a million others)
    "Storm" - Fleetwood Mac

The last mentioned song would be my preference and the only suggestion I would have made if I had not felt pressurised into compiling a list.

    Come on the bloggers!

    Thursday:

The daughter has discovered country music...Keith Urban is a favourite. You could play Steve Forbert - 'Romeo's Tune' to remind her that, though Keith is more handsome, Steve's original version (which she heard first...live incidentally) is the better one.

'I'm Beggin' - Madcon...again for The Daughter...busking breakdancers danced to this where we were on holiday this year. We stopped to watch them a lot during our stay and I couldn't stop singing the chorus of this song (which I love...it really got on her nerves).

Some Tull for Scotch et al...you gotta do it really haven't you...it's only fair ;0)

Tina Turner's version of 'Help', for my Sister...cos that's what she does for me.

The bin lorry went to the house on bin day. No sign of any bucket at the door. Being a kind sort of environmental officer, the dustman rang the doorbell. The elderly occupant of the house took his time, but eventually appeared.

"Where's your bin mate?" says the skaffie (are we allowed to refer to them in such a manner these days? Another £10 to Children In Need if this post still on the blog by Monday midday)

"Ehhmm, I bin in the kitchen!" says the house owner.

"Naw, I asked where's your bin!" says the dustman

The old guy looks flustered. "Ehhhmmm, I bin in the hall?"

"Naw mate, you misunderstand! Where's your wheelie bin??!!!"

#54 bbq? BBQ? It husnae stopped raining since June. Breaks my heart to see these weather maps every day. Why are the '³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Counties' bathed in glorious sunshine whilst god's chosen people get constantly peed on from a great height.

#61 It's product placement Jim but not as we know it. This'll cost DC another score note if it's still up by monday lunchtime.

  • Comment number 95.

    Hello.

For the weather programme 0n Monday, I'd like to suggest the Grace Jones track 'Walking In The Rain' from 1981. A great single from the very under-rated Nightclubbing album.

It was good to see Grace back last year with another excellent album.

    Cheers.
