Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 17:34 UK time, Saturday, 4 April 2009

I'm hoping I don't have to play some 'trance' on Monday night's 'dreams theme', however on GIO anything is possible. Last week we managed Connie Francis, The Subways and the theme from Benny Hill. Let's try and make it another diverse week of listening. Email your suggestions or why not leave a comment on the blog...

rockyandrews.jpgMonday:
All you have to do is dream if you want to take part in tonight's show. Dreamy ditties and the odd nightmare all welcome for tonight's dream show...

Tuesday:
Geoff in Edinburgh suggests 'stirring songs' as a theme for tonight. What are the uplifting anthems that raise you up? Do you get roused by Runrig or does Beautiful Day make yours? Get in touch and get them on....

Wed:

All you Apprentice fans will have plenty of suggestions for tonight. It's songs about business and it's been suggested by Richard Cairns. Whether it's 'Grocer Jack' or 'Money, Money,Money' we're looking forward to hearing your suggestions...

Thursday:
What Do You Wanna Make Those Eyes At Me For and Why Does It Always Rain On Me? We'll attempt to answer all your questions on tonight's Get It On....

Don't know whether this stands a good chance of being played for being a Beatles track (second most played artist on GiO, folks), or not for not being a conventional track, but:

  • Comment number 47.

    oops nightmares?

  • Comment number 48.

I would like to add my negligible weight to

These Dreams - Heart - A guilty pleasure
Dreamweaver - Gary Wright - Scandalously underrated
Dreams - Grace Slick - One of the great voices. Unfortunately this has as much chance of being played as of Russell Brand settling the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ's fine.

  • Comment number 49.

#46 I saw that too, and I think I know the joke to which you are alluding!

  • Comment number 50.

    MON (Dreams + Nightmares):

    'Dreams' - Ty
I love the laidback brass and backing vocal on this track

'Nights Interlude' - Nightmares on Wax
The most misleadingly named band I know - and the song is dreamy, not nightmarish. Classic 'chillout' music (album version of this track is called '...IntROlude' - slightly longer version).

#38 - ...on the other hand 'Propane Nightmare' pretty much does what it says on the tin. I'd like to hear Pendulum on the show just for the hell of it - you've played the Prodigy before.

  • Comment number 51.

    MONDAY:

Forgot 'Dream Kitchen' by Frazier Chorus

    and

'Let Jesus Make You Breakfast' - BR549 (first line is "Well I woke up from a nightmare)

  • Comment number 52.

    Daybream Believer - Monkees
    I Dreamed I Saw St Augustine / Bob Dylan's 115th Dream - Bob Dylan
Working on a Dream - Bruce Springsteen
    Daydream - Lovin Spoonful
After the Goldrush - Neil Young (well I dreamed I saw the knights in armour)
Hold Back the Night - Graham Parker (I want to dream about you baby)
THe Man Comes Around - Johnny Cash (about a dream he had abotu the queen quotign the book of revelations)
    Dream Lover - Big Star
In a Broken Dream - Python Lee Jackson

    ..and time to stop

  • Comment number 53.

    E.L.O. - One Summer Dream
    Carpenters - I Can Dream Can't I
    Air Supply - Sweet Dreams
Neil Young - Hurricane... I am just a dreamer and you are just a dream..
Joni Mitchell - Silky Veils of Ardour .. just in dreams we fly...

  • Comment number 54.

    #48
Well said Glen. I don't own a lot of Gary Wright's stuff but The Dreamweaver would definitely be in my top 10 albums of the 70's. It woud be good to hear him on the show.

    #53
Paul, forgot all about that ELO track. That's what happens in time when you replace vinyl albums with best of CD's

  • Comment number 55.

    Wed:

Second Jim's shout for Flying Lizards, plus a couple of Madness tracks:

    * The Business
    * That's The Way to Do It (wonderful little ditty about yer stereotypical 'anyfing for cash' odd-job man)
    * Deceives The Eye (A very *different* kind of business)

    and *someone's* got to request
    * Pink Floyd: Money
but you could go a bit leftfield and have the Gary "Nesta" Pine and Dollarman version from Dub Side of the Moon (a dub reggae cover of the whole album)

  • Comment number 56.

#55 Captain - I'll second your request for the Floyd track, for sure.

  • Comment number 57.

    Dreams

Fever Dream - Iron & Wine (Thanks to D from Canada for introducing me)
    Bad Dreams - Joni Mitchell

  • Comment number 58.

How about Mama Cass' version of Dream a Little Dream of Me tonight?

Tuesday anthems - Dougie MacLean's Caledonia has to be there - although it's about Scotland (obviously!!), it's still the only song that makes me a bit homesick.

  • Comment number 59.

And - just saw Thursday's theme - how about:

Where is my mind? -The Pixies
Should I stay or should I go? - The Clash
Are you gonna go my way? - Lenny Kravitz

  • Comment number 60.

#54, Paulo I haven't heard it since I played it on an old pre-recorded tape! Never had the pleasure of hearing it on vinyl sadly.

  • Comment number 61.

    MONDAY

Bryan Ferry "Smoke Dreams" a '30s song from the 'As Time Goes By' S sessions and was released on the 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' CD single.

    TUESDAY

I don't do anthems. I have never been a fan of the 'rock anthem' type song or the 'killer chorus'. I find a lot of songs moving and uplifting but not in an anthemic way. "A Song For Europe" (post #39) is one of them as

    WEDNESDAY

Roxy Music "Your Application's Failed" something I am finding just now due to the downturn in the construction industry and just been made redundant. :-(

    THURSDAY

Bryan Ferry "Is Your Love Strong Enough?" featuring David Gilmoir on guitar.

  • Comment number 62.

    Re: 22
R.E.M actually do a great cover of 'All I Have To Do Is Dream' too. I guess that would be two for the price of one!

I will definitely second andyontheM77's Iron and Wine suggestion (glad you like him) as well as rhythmheid's suggestion for Nightmares on Wax.

    Nagasaki Nightmare - Crass
    Enter Sandman - Metallica
Midnight Summer Dream - The Stranglers

    Not necessarily anthems...

'Rome Wasn't Built In A Day' - Morcheeba

'Sittin' On Top Of The World' - Don Mclean (yodelling - always bound to cheer me up).

'Sing Sing Sing' - Benny Goodman Orchestra (wonderful uplifting drumbeat...could get BB and Babs lindy-hopping round the studio...what would the guys in the sports dept make of that?).

    'I'm Yours' - Jason Mraz

    'Follow me' - Amanda LIRA
'Me and BAWBEE McGee' - Kris Kristofferson

#61/#67/#78 - I'm with Paolo on this, I thought straight away of soul songs not rock anthems.

TUE - stirring songs. I think this is quite close to my 'songs that build up' idea so I'll use some of those (.

    'Les Fleurs' - Minnie Riperton
Talk about uplifting - the two crescendos in this song feel like lift-off! Could also work in 'flowers' theme (next week?).

    'Morning Child' - 4Hero
From 2007 but sounds like classic soul.

    'California Soul' - Marlena Shaw
Great uplifting tune for the end of a Northern Soul night.

'Lonely for You Baby' - Sam Dees
Recently got this back on CD after old copy was nicked. Love the way this builds from the intro.

Firstly I sincerely hope something comes up for RJ very soon - I am in the same industry and believe me it is not easy at the moment.

But I dont think Tuesdays tracks have to be Rock Anthems at all, sure there will be some but they dont need to be.

    Uplifting, it has to be:

Pressure Drop - Toots and the Maytals
    Pressure Drop - Specials
No Woman No Cry - Bob marley
    Promised Land - Johnny Allen

#85, Yes Julie, Rosee Oh Ro-oh-see is "uplifting" in that happy carefree sixties way, to which I'd add the following in a similar vein:-

    Concrete & Clay - Unit 4 + 2
    Getting Better - Mama Cass

"Stirring" though for me is something with more of a rush like:-

Rock & Roll - Led Zep
When You Dance I can Really Love - Neil Young

    A bit of both maybe:-

    Atomic - Blondie
    Wow - Kate Bush

    Stirring

Both these songs stir me - even though they may not be seen as 'anthems':

Feeling Good - Nina Simone (or, for a change, the excellent version with Alice Russell singing with the Quantic Soul Orchestra)
Crying - kd lang and Roy Orbison

    Stirring

Just thought of another one (in a different style):

Come Up and See Me (Make Me Smile) - Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel

Right thats it I've cracked.........no one has suggested this to my amazement

    Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road

surely that is the uplifting song of all time?

yeah but it has to be the hammersmith 1975 version. Er have I ever mentioned that before?

#90/#92 - Some Maytals or Quantic stuff would be good.

#95 - Are you saddling up the hobby horse or flogging it?! ;-D

    (Cue Grand National/jockey's teeth jokes...)

    WEDNESDAY:

    'Free Money' - Patti Smith

'Taking Care of Business' - Bachman Turner Overdrive.

'In Tall Buildings' (office work) - Gillian Welch (from 'A Tribute to John Hartford).

'Bright Future In Sales' - Fountains of Wayne (great poppy, bouncy tune but a wee sweary word in the chorus - any radio-friendly version?).

#98 - Couldn't find a radio edit/single version on Google. Welcome to my (and Danielle's) world!

Thanks for prompting me to remember about 'Radio Friendly Unit Shifter' by Nirvana for Wednesday. Might not be the first track on the playlist but no swearing!
