Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 10:03 UK time, Saturday, 22 November 2008

After another busy week of GIO it's time once again to start thinking about next week's themes. Have a look at these and post your suggestions on the blog or email me at the usual address...

disc.jpg

Monday
Alex in Glasgow suggested 'weight' as a theme for tonight. That could mean anything from 16 Tons to He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother. If you are thinking about a pre-Christmas diet then you are sure to be inspired by tonight's show....

Tuesday
Shake, Rattle and Roll is the time tonight. I can think of a certain Welsh rock n roll legend who is bound to make an appearance, but get in touch and let me know what else you want to hear...

Wednesday
Another two parter this week. Girl bands is the theme tonight....

Thursday
....Which means it's boy bands tonight, but please don't think I mean two hours of Westlife! Arctic Monkeys, The Beatles and other bands with 'boys' in them will all feature. E-mail getiton@bbc.co.uk or leave your suggestion on the blog...

  • Comment number 8.

    TUESDAY

If Bryan can think of a certain Welsh rock 'n' roll legend he must be determined to play Cerys Matthews.

  • Comment number 9.

    SG

I think he means Harry Secombe

  • Comment number 10.

    Mon

Stone Free - The Jimi Hendrix Experience - no tricks, no unpleasant bendng - just steady weight loss

    Tue

The Witch - The Rattles - sehr gut

    Wed

I'm Ready For Love - Martha and The Vandellas - 2:56 of magic from a bungalow in Detroit

    Thur

The Hula Hula Boys - Warren Zevon - Band of Gold from a male viewpoint

Is Cerys invited in January? She could do a medley of her hit.

  • Comment number 11.

    Joe #2

Gram - very clever! Whilst writing may I commend your selection of Fire buy the Pointer Sisters to the board!

    Cheers

    Norrie

  • Comment number 12.

Anyone else love the new Springsteen single?

  • Comment number 13.

    WEDNESDAY

Many moons ago, I went to the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow to hear an all-female Country band, who called themselves the 'Well-Oiled Girls'

It took me a while to realise that I was the only man in the place who wasn't a woman.

    The music was rather good.

Plus, no queue for the Gents.

  • Comment number 14.

Ah, that old chestnut is STILL your best eh, Glenn!

    Mon.

    Skin Flint - Symarip

    Tues.

Tennessee Rock n' Roll - Shakin' Pyramids

    Wed.

We got the beat - Go go's

    Thurs.

Ay ay ay ay Moosey - Modern Romance

  • Comment number 15.

Scotch - are you sure it was not the Indigo Girls who I have seen many times, and actually went for cofee with in Edinburgh one day but that is another strory, and yes your comments about the toilet queue were applicable every time I have seen them.

Great though, love them So how about and Indigo Girls week except boy band might beat me ...

    Mon - Shed This Skin

Tues - Rock N Roll Heavens Gate

Wed - Gallileo (always in my top ten tracks, with wonderful harmony from Jackson Browne and David Crosby)

Thursday - Clampdown (their cover of the Clash classic)!

And if it was not the Indigo Girls - never mind still good songs!

  • Comment number 16.

    Update! Well Oiled Sisters??

  • Comment number 17.

Norrie: What about 'The Girl With The Weight Of The World In Her Hands' - The Indigo Girls for Monday?

  • Comment number 18.

I dont know that one Danielle - off to check my collection! Great shout though......ah got it on Nomads, going on the CD player as we speak!

  • Comment number 19.

Norrie: It seems Eddi Reader has done a cover of the song too. I've never heard that version though.

  • Comment number 20.

I am ashamed Danielle - I have Nomads on, I dont think I have ever listened to it properly before and it is outstanding!

First time I saw Indigo Girls was a s support act to 10,000 Maniacs 27 May 89, not a bad gig!!

  • Comment number 21.

    I'm glad you enjoyed it!
It sounds like that would have been a fantastic show. Do you keep all of your concert tickets? I can't believe you remember the exact date!

  • Comment number 22.

My Uni chum and I have been gig buddies for a very long time now - he has them all, I have most but alcohol has sometimes got in the way for me and they have been lost, damaged etc !!

  • Comment number 23.

    Norrie,
I'm pretty sure I have the name right.
The lead singer had a Teddy Boy quiff an Elvis impersonator would kill for.
The fiddle player was drop-dead gorgeous, long blonde hair and long, long stocking clad legs.

  • Comment number 24.

And no chance to rub shoulders with famous authors.

I prefer Cerys Matthews to Eddie Reader

  • Comment number 25.

I can't wait for girl bands on Wednesday!

Of course you've got to play the Bangles, but how about one of their lesser-known tracks, like their excellent cover of Elvis Costello's "Tear Off Your Own Head" or Big Star's "September Gurls", both of which are better than the originals?

And I'd love to hear "America Blue" or anything else by my favorite Scottish girl band, His Latest Flame.

  • Comment number 26.

Scotch-git: I think I've found your band 'The Well Oiled Sisters'. An article I read states:
The Sisters were thrust into the spotlight when Morrissey spotted them and promptly signed them up for his "Up Yer Arsenal European Tour".
I think your blonde, long 'stocking clad' legged fiddle player has a MySpace page - Alison Jones.

  • Comment number 27.

oops, I just saw that Norrie had already suggested The Well Oiled Sisters. I guess it's time to walk away from the computer now...

  • Comment number 28.

    Danielle,
Please, enough with the name beginning with 'M' already.
Norrie keeps requesting him, and, even worse, Bryan keeps playing his alleged 'songs' !!!

I bet they don't play the name beginning with 'M' in Canada.
    You are so lucky.

    Apart from Neil Young.

  • Comment number 29.

    SG
What are you doing blogging at 3am?!!
Thats devotion to the cause....drink or shift work?!

    Monday
Mika - Big Girl (You are Beautiful)
Brand New Heavies - Apparently Nothing

Guess we will have to endure He Ain't Heavy for this theme, damn......

    Maria

  • Comment number 30.

    Maria,
I blame the 'M' word. It exacerbates my condition.

  • Comment number 31.

Scotch-git: I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders to know that I've worsened your condition. Please accept my heartfelt apologies.
No name beginning with 'M' here in Canada. It's all Polar bear musings set to the back beat of Whale music for us. Oh, and some Neil Young.

  • Comment number 32.

    Shake Rattle and Roll

Johhny Kid and The Pirates - Shaking All Over, a childhood favourite

Dave Edmunds - I Knew The Bride (when she used to rock n roll)

  • Comment number 33.

Been away for a few days, haven't listened to the 78 show yet, but I detect some displeasure among the Bloggers!
    What went wrong?

  • Comment number 34.

    Adam,
We started with a song from 1972

Then it got a bit silly.

Although it never plumbed the depths of the infamous 'Smash Hits' theme night.

  • Comment number 35.

    Danielle,
You are too kind. Thank you for being so understanding.

Will you have a word with Norrie?

I think he listens to you...............

  • Comment number 36.

Isn't Neil Young known an Shaky?

    What about R o c k i n g in The Free World?

  • Comment number 37.

    MONDAY:

    "Sam" - Olivia NEWTON John

"A Family Affair" - Sly and the Family STONE

"I Don't Believe in Miracles" - Colin BlunSTONE

"Don't Want To WAIT Anymore" - The Tubes

    The Band's "THE WEIGHT"

doesn't all need to be heavyweight stuff...what about that rock and roll song Boney Maroney by Larry Williams "(she's as skinny as a stick of macaroni")...or "Sundown" by Gordon LIGHTfoot?

  • Comment number 38.

    Tuesday:
Before I forget...see if you can find "Hey Mae" by Rusty and Doug Kershaw (NOT the Shakin Stevens cover version).

  • Comment number 39.

A good track for the Boy / Girl bands theme would be

Susannah Hoffs (from Bangles) cover of Boys Keep Swinging.

Which odd though it may seem is excellent.

  • Comment number 40.

    Monday - Weight

    The Weight - The Band
Weight Of The World - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
    Weight Of Water - Low

Tuesday - Shake, Rattle and Roll

Shake Your Rump - Beastie Boys
    Rattlesnakes - Tori Amos
Rock 'n' Roll - The Velvet Underground

    Wednesday - Girl Bands

    Luscious Jackson - Here
The Donnas - Take It Off
    Sleater-Kinney - You're No Rock N' Roll Fun
Tegan and Sara - Back In Your Head

Bedouin Soundclash - When The Night Feels My Song
Band Of Horses - Is There A Ghost
Vampire Weekend - Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa
Fleet Foxes - Blue Ridge Mountains
    MGMT - Electric Feel

  • Comment number 41.

Oh, I just realized Julie had already requested The Weight - so I'd like to second her suggestion.

Scotch-git - I can only take responsibility for my own actions, but will keep your 'condition' in mind with future requests.

  • Comment number 42.

Velvets and Rock n Roll - great suggestion.

  • Comment number 43.

    I'm desperate, Dan !!!

  • Comment number 44.

SG - your gin and tonic in January is dissapearing over the horizon! Withdraw that remark or I will suggest Smths / Morrisey all week!

  • Comment number 45.

    Danielle,

Nice one with Weight Of The World

    Tues. could also suggest...

    Whatever happened to my rock & roll – B R M C ???

  • Comment number 46.

    Norrie,
Read it again. Better still, say it out loud!

  • Comment number 47.

    R
Thursday - Boys From The Blackstuff

  • Comment number 48.

Bleasdale is much funnier than Pinter........

  • Comment number 49.

SG - I am going to keep a tab of how many times you lose me.....

  • Comment number 50.

    #33 Adam

Show was sadly a big let down, but hey they only play what people suggest so that is fair enough.

Quite how Because the Night, having been suggested by almost every blogger was not played......

  • Comment number 51.

madmac - sounds good to me! I would have said they'd also fit Thursday's theme, but I guess they don't any longer do they?

Norrie - thanks. I really hope they play it!

  • Comment number 52.

glenmiller - Shakey would work. I'm looking at his biography on my bookshelf as I type this.
I'm not sure if Scotch-git's constitution could take it though.

  • Comment number 53.

Scotch's bark is worse than his bite unless you're a tramp (hobo/homeless person).

I've just thought of a great song For Thursday by The Lost Boys (Steve van Zandt) called Affection.

Only available, as far as I know, from the second Sopranos soundtrack album.

  • Comment number 54.

    Norrie,
When HFG made his (very funny) 'best buddies' post it took my brain an entire day to join the dots.
All those years of alcohol abuse are taking their toll. :-D

  • Comment number 55.

    For Monday, how about :

The Jam - The E'ton' Rifles
Diana Ross - I'm Still 'Weighting'
    Eric Clap'ton' - Layla

    Lol

  • Comment number 56.

    Monday - Weight:
Turn To Stone - Electric Light Orchestra
He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother - The Hollies
Selling England By The Pound - Genesis

Tuesday - Shake, Rattle and Roll:
Shake, Rattle and Roll - Bill Haley and The Comets
Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys
California Earthquake - The Mamas and The Papas
Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On - Jerry Lee Lewis

    Wednesday - Girl Bands:
Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy - The Andrews Sisters
    Robert Deniro's Waiting - Bananarama
I'll Stand By You - Girls Aloud (rubbish band, great song though!)

    Thursday - Boy Bands:
Heartland - Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young
The Only Living Boy In New York - Simon and Garfunkel
Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys

  • Comment number 57.

OMG Glem Miller - talk about bringing one out from the depths! Fantastic track by Miami/Little steven/ Steven Van Zandt, from an album he could not get a deal for.

  • Comment number 58.

OMG Morrie (LOL) I'll third that suggestion - great choice! :-)

  • Comment number 59.

I feel a falling out with the board coming on again....

  • Comment number 60.

Bagsie me NOT the CEO - these days those fools are the first for the chop...

  • Comment number 61.

Ballad of a Thin Man - Bob Dylan

  • Comment number 62.

Right you are Norrie and SG.

    Monday

    Crazy in Love - BeyOUNCE
    TeleGRAM Sam - T Rex

  • Comment number 63.

    Hello,

No Choplet yet, Norrie - just got a bit snowed under last week hence no posting. Did I hear right? Can we get signed photos of Bryan and the delightful Ms Babs? Can I get one sent to Mr Chops the Dwarf, 13 Mordor, Middle Earth etc. Ta! I was thinking of things that rhyme with Babs this morning whilst walking the mutt.

    She likes kebabs
    She taps all your tabs
    Babs

(I assume this is entirely untrue as I have no way of knowing if the real Ms Babs likes kebabs or taps all your tabs. Maybe we'll find out on the show.)

    Monday

Nine Pound Hammer - Merle Travis

I guess this song isn't as well known as Travis' 16 tonnes (thanks to the 'Tennessee' Ernie Ford cover) but I still think it's a great wee song. Merle Travis was a tremendous guitar player who pioneered Travis picking (playing a steady boom-chick accompaniment using the thumb pick whilst using the other fingers on the right hand to play the melody) which Chet Atkins took forward considerably. Actually I've got a front row ticket to see Tommy Emmanuel tonight who is IMO the finest guitarist in the world (who plays in this style) - so I'll probably miss the second half of GIO.

    Heavy Metal Drummer - Wilco

Weightlifting - Trashcan Sinatras. I have to say I far prefer Francis Reader's singing to that of his sister. And to Cerys Mathews.

    Tuesday

I'll take the bait - Green Door by Shakin Stevens. I remember at the time wondering how music could ever be any greater than this.

    Wednesday

If she knew what she wants - The Bangles

    Thursday

Just My Imagination - The Temptations

    Avanti!
    Mr Chops the Dwarf

  • Comment number 64.

Completely forgot the magnificent Weightless Again by The Handsome Family for tonight...

Did mention this a couple of blogs ago in reference to the great Cerys Matthews but for fear of getting hounded out of town by a torchlit mob I won't defend her cover of it...

    Maria ;-)

  • Comment number 65.

There has to be a bit of room in tonight's show for Fats Domino or how about "More bounce to the ounce" by Zapp and Roger.

It's awful but more likely to fit tonight's theme than a lot of stuff that will be played.

Cerys Matthews - isn't that Cardiff City's centre forward?

  • Comment number 66.

Capathia Jenkins- 'One Ounce Of Truth'

  • Comment number 67.

    Swansea's, EC.

.....and I'll have a pint of what the Dwarf's having.

  • Comment number 68.

Neil Diamond's "Stones" is certainly worth a play tonight as is Slim Whitman's "Rose Marie". The Rolling Stones' "Beast of Burden" could qualify on two counts I suppose. The Beatles' "Helter Skelter" is generally considered to be the first Heavy metal song so it should be on the playlist

    DC in Cellardyke

  • Comment number 69.

    Monday: Greetings All.

Would like to suggest something from "Doremi Fasol Latido" by Hawkwind for tonight (get it?). I know BB and co. will probably not even deign to read out this request from past experience but I would like Urban Guerrilla which is V radio friendly at 3:41mins (on the remastered CD version) or, if BB can't stand that, there's a 49 second track called One Change.

Failing that how about Them Heavy People by Kate Bush.

    Cheers Ali

  • Comment number 70.

    Norrie #32
Generation X do a good cover of Shakin All Over, think it was B-side of Ready Steady Go.

  • Comment number 71.

    #67

AFR - The dwarf will not be Happy.

  • Comment number 72.

    #67

AFR - Mr Chops won't be Happy.

  • Comment number 73.

I'm furious! There's steam coming out of my ears!

Not really, though a pint does sound good :-)

  • Comment number 74.

    EC #71,

    Which one is he then?

(Thought there was a Taft Hill pact on the go...)

    DC in Cellardyke

  • Comment number 75.

Ali #70 I have not heard that version - that would have been good for 1978 evening! I'll need to tray and track that one down!

  • Comment number 76.

Tuesday: Travelling Wilburies: Rattled (as we didnae get the Wilburies' "Last Night" last week despite numerous people asking!)

  • Comment number 77.

    SG

You must say that that was a fine M track and totally in keeping with the theme?

  • Comment number 78.

Tue: Think I got the wrong end of the stick with my previous post. Here's an amendment:

I'd love to hear some more Brian Setzer Orchestra on the show - "The Dirty Boogie" mentions shaking and rattling.

"Shake It" - Ian Matthews (of Matthews Southern Comfort and Fairport Convention - one of my singles that I can't play).

"Roll On Down The Highway" - Bachman Turner Overdrive

"Roll Over Lay Down" - Status Quo

    "Shake" - Otis Redding

  • Comment number 79.

Tuesday: Hows about "The Sheik of Araby" by the Beatles, "Angel of Harlem" by U2 from the Rattle and Hum album, and "Roll with it" by Oasis?

    DC in Cellardyke

  • Comment number 80.

I liked the Trashcan Sinatras but how many times have we heard Queen?

  • Comment number 81.

    Norrie,
I must have been oot the hoose and not quite in the car.
    Did I miss something?

  • Comment number 82.

No SG, not at all. Dont know if you heard Vic Galloway tonight, all soul, all good.

Any more info on the leggy blonde with stockings yet?

  • Comment number 83.

Message for Joe K - Springsteen new song avialble as free download till about 5pm tomorrow. You probably knew that!

  • Comment number 84.

    Norrie,
I wasn't being flippant. I have a class on a Monday evening, and always miss most of the second hour. I'll check the playlist later.

As for Alison Jones, Danielle seems to have more information than I can acquire.
You were right about the band's name. Funny how your memory plays tricks on you.

    I wonder if she's Welsh?

  • Comment number 85.

LOL! Especially if the name is not the foremost on your mind!

  • Comment number 86.

Scotch-git: Here is the link I was referring to:

Hopefully this will be enough to take your mind off the song you 'M'issed' tonight.

  • Comment number 87.

    Danielle,
You're a wee angel! Thank you. Get me her phone number, I'll send you some shortbread.

  • Comment number 88.

Sounds tempting. I'll see what I can do...

  • Comment number 89.

    Tues:

Roll Over Beethoven.. either the original by Chuck Berry or the ELO version but NOT the Beatles !

Shake Rattle and Roll - Big Joe Turner or Bill Haley

    Rock N Roll Train - AC/DC

Shake Rattle & Roll - Arthur Conley

Salt and Shake by the Smiths !

Rock and Roll - Gary Glitter

    Tam

  • Comment number 90.

    Tuesday
I'll back Tam up big time for "Rock and Roll Train". And Julie's "Roll Over Lay Down".
I presume someone has already suggested "Roll Away the Stone" by Mott the Hoople, so I'll back them on that too.

Here Norrie, are you trying to steal the GOM mantle from me and EC? Once the show's darling too. I think you've gotten in with a bad crowd Master Maclean.

  • Comment number 91.

Wednesday. I love the names of the girl groups from the 60s, such as:

The Marvelettes (Too Many Fish In The Sea)

The Dixie Cups (Chapel of Love)

    The Shirelles (Baby It's You)

The Caravelles (You Don't Have To Be a Baby to Cry)

    The Chiffons (Sweet Talking Guy)

    The Crystals (He's a Rebel)

  • Comment number 92.

AFR I will ignore most of that except to say

Rock n Roll Train - roll on Manchester really looking forwrad to that gig

Roll Away The Stone - absolute classic, saw Ian Hunter a couple of times recently, well within the last year or so, and he is still fantastic.

Great two tracks hope they are both played.

    Me grumpy......surely not!

  • Comment number 93.

Norrie - if I do manage to be organised enough to get myself over to Glasgow for the January GIOgettogether you'd better be charm personified or I'll be extremely disappointed!!! :0)

  • Comment number 94.

I'm sure he is Julie. It just that Git and Miller leading him astray.

  • Comment number 95.

    Norrie, Re: #81 & #84

When Bryan warned us what was coming I switched off, and resumed listening in the car after the news.

I was just trying to spare your feelings, with you having been so grumpy recently...........

  • Comment number 96.

AFR - now we know which side the bread's buttered.

Nothing from the girlies to Norrie about how grumpy he's been lately. Bet they won't miss if we say anything.

Agree wholeheartedly with "Roll Away the Stone", though given that 75% of bloggers last week requested "Because the Night" on '78 night and it wasn't played, won't be holding my breath for Mott the Hoople tonight.

I'll add the following but don't reckon they'll make the airwaves:

Rock and Roll ain't noise pollution - AC/DC
Rock and Roll - Led Zepplin
Rollin and Tumblin - Cream (Ginger 'Baker' must have made a few rolls in his time)

  • Comment number 97.

#96 reminds me that the lyrics of "Burlesque" by Family (which was asked for before by (I think) Scotch) include the line "Rollin and tumblin ain't done me no harm". It's a great record and not heard at all on radio these days I'd bet.

  • Comment number 98.

Julie - have to agree re-Burlesque. Great record.

    Girlie Groups for Wednesday

    Venus - Bananarama
    The Happening - Supremes
    Manic Monday - The Bangles
Sign of the Times - The Belle Stars
Sweet Talking Guy - The Chiffons
    Remember - Shangrila's

  • Comment number 99.

    Girls

    Indigo Girls - Gallileo
    Alishas Attic - I Am, I Feel
    Pointer Sisters - Fire

    Boys

Temptations - Aint Too Proud To Beg
Byrds - One Hundred Years From Now (preferably Gram on lead vocals take)
    Melodians - Sweet Sensation

    Both

Girlschool w Motorhead - Please Dont Touch

Fun Boy Three & bananarana - Our Lips Are Sealed

Susannah Hoffs - Boys Keep Swinging.

  • Comment number 100.

Thursday: Backstreet Boys - "Everybody (Backstreets Back)"...and yes I am serious - my daughter was a "weenybopper" when they were having hit records and I can't help but have a fondness for some of her favourite songs of the time. It is catchy :0)
